The motivation for initiating i-STEEx is to provide an avenue for youth to demonstrate their
creativity and hands-on skills to make their design concept work. A unique aspect of i-STEEx
is the emphasis on the process of coming up with an innovation based on their knowledge
in science, in which they are required to explain the mechanism of their innovation and/or
theory applied for optimising their design using theory in physics or chemistry. It is hoped that
their journey to innovate practical solutions will cultivate their passion in science and hands-
on skill to make science work, as the saying goes, seeing is believing.
Another driving factor for i-STEEx is the recognition and support provided by the professional
bodies namely the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Institution of Electrical
and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), as well as Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sarawak (JPNS) and
the Malaysian Research and Innovation Society (MyRIS), being the co-organisers. In addition,
the sponsorship by Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) also underlines
the relevance of this expo to their commitment to achieve 60 % of the total number of
students pursuing the STEM-related fields.
My aspiration for i-STEEx is to become among the avenues to discover academic and vocational
talents in STEM-related field among youth and assist the progressive development of their
innovation through a system (state, national and international level innovation competitions)
recognised by various stakeholders especially governing bodies, professional bodies, employers,
schools and public. With this, I hope for more active involvement, recognition and support
by local governing bodies such as the Ministry of Education to ensure the continuity such
event in effort to create awareness among public on the potential of STEM in Malaysia in the
long-term.
I would like to congratulate and thank my team members: Prof Dr Ng Chee Khoon, Dr Tay
Kai Meng and Dr Annie Joseph, the UNIMAS-STEM EnCon 2016 committee and crew,
judges, sponsors, as well as the Faculty of Engineering and UNIMAS for their cooperation
and immense support to make this expo a success.

Concentration of high iron and manganese in groundwater can be removed by a process which
combines oxidation and filtration. This study focused on the effectiveness of the cascade aerator
and the size of the limestone filter media to remove iron and manganese from groundwater.
Water samples used for this study were collected from orphanage home, Rumah Nur Kasih,
Taiping. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has provided a tube well of 15 m depth and 150 mm
diameter for the orphanage home. However, the water cannot be used for domestic consumption
due to high amount of iron and manganese at 6.47 and 1.9 mg/l which exceeded the drinking
water standard of 0.3 and 0.1 mg/l respectively. Using laboratory physical model, the study has
shown that the removals of iron and manganese have achieved 0.17 and 0.6 mg/l respectively.
Thus, the results from this study which utilize cascade aerator and limestone roughing filter
could be implemented on site for the community to use the ground water for domestic purposes.

In sport sciences, a common method for analysing performance based on body motion is
to film athletes and annotate the footage offline manually using a video digitisation system.
It is a popular method in many sports but requires expertise from the system operator to
anotate the videos to highlight important components of the video contents. An alternative
way is to ise a motion tracking system in order to extract a skeleton model of the athlete
automatically using physical body markers and perform manual analysis later in offline mode.
The proposed system would be able to compare and quantitatively analyse the motion that
is performed in an automated manner using Microsoft Kinect sensor. The analysis includes
measurement of overall difference between refernce and sample athlete motion, joints’
orientations, joints’ distance relative to spine joint and region of movements.

Many robbery crime case have been reported especially agaist 24-hour
stores, banks and private properties although the premises are equipped
with CCTVs. The latest statistics shows a decreasing trend, but the
amount of cases are still worrying (more than 10,000 cases per year
reported). Many premises do not have adequate security therefore if a
robbery haappens, the related victims do not call the police immediately
during the crime incident is taking place instead, in most cases the victims
only wait until the crime incident has passed before contacting the police.
By this time, it is all too late for the police to take necessary actions.

Observing a skater and a jogger moving together, we discovered that the skater can move faster than
the jogger. This shows that wheels can help move objects better. Our school is always organizing
events in the school hall and the students often have to cart many chairs from the classes to the school
hall. They often moaned that it is tiring and time consuming to move the chairs from one place to
another with just mere human strength. To solve this problem, we invented the magic rollers using
used cans and wheels to make the moving of the chairs easier, faster and more efficient. Although this
invention is a success, the students still faced minor glitches. The students think that it still takes a lot
of effort and time to attach the legs of the chairs into the magic rollers. Moreover, it is tedious having
to lug around 4 magic rollers. We found out that it is better if we make the magic rollers into a 4-in-1
project. This eco-friendly product can help move heavy objects faster.

OAB is actually an innovation originally made by a plastic ball. With it’s harmless features and
functioning as a great oil absorber. The hair inside this ball would surely help to reduce the
consumption of oil in the water. This innovation is also helpful daily life. We have faced a lot of
chaos, starting from the block sink, cause by the oil. We can surely use this ball for these kind of
daily problems. A part from that, OAB is also light and eco friendly. The materials that we use to
make this innovation is all based on one concept which is the reduce, reuse and recycle methods.
Hair is actually great for oil absorbing. By using 3R concept we can recycle old toys which is the
plastic ball that we use in this project, we can also reduce the consumption of garbage.

We noticed the dust spreading around in class. We wish to find ways to in-
vent things using recyclable materials and to prepare the students and school
citizens towards the application of HOTS. We wish to ease the work of the
students on duty for cleaning the dusters. We notice that a closed sharpener
can help to keep pencil shavings in the lower compartments after the pencils
are sharpened, thus we design a box with wire gauze in it.The wire gauze is
used to remove the dust from dusters. The wire gauze is a hard material that
creates a bigger impulsive force than a soft material. This is because the time
of impact between the duster and the wire gauze is longer. The lower com-
partment of the box allows the chalk dust to be easily disposed. The “ Miracle
Dust Cleaner” protects the students who are allergic to dust and creates a
dust-free study environment. To use the box, one should put a duster in it
and close it with a cover. Then, shake the box to allow the chalk dust to be
removed.

Measuring liquids with accurate volumes is messy and usually causing wastage due to excesses.
Indiscriminate disposal of excesses like pesticides and toxic materials will further pollute
our environment. This prototype makes use of normal disposable mineral bottles and can
be designed to obtain any predetermined volumes of liquid automatically and accurately
without using any other measuring devices and minimising in-contact with the liquid. This
prototype is made from normal mineral bottles, is a “2 in 1” concept, a container and also a
measuring device. It is automatic, hence being user-friendly, able to dispense exact accurate
volume of liquid each time when needed. No occurence of over-pouring and no post-pouring
cleaning is needed, relevant for toxic or caustic liquids, creating a greener environment.

good conditions but they are also too old to be donated. The fabric of the cloths especially
made of cotton are very good for air flow. So, we decided to bring the old cloths together
and turn them into our Recyling Project: Green Pot. Any container can be used to be a

hold soil for plantation. Fabric pot can air prunes our plants’ roots. Fabric is also a superb
drainage for the water logging in soils. Upon all, fabric pot cools the plants root better than

portable devices like laptops. However, the biggest limitation of laptops is its battery life. 80% of
the battery capacity is 1 to 2 years. Don’t throw away the battery yet! It’s time to apply the 3Rs of
the environment: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We can reduce the pollution, reuse the batteries
and recycle them into a power pack (portable power bank). Our 3R-POWER PACK is easy to
assemble, portable and safe to be used. First, we identify the rechargable cells in spoilded laptop
batteries which are still in good conditions. Then, we link the rechargable cells togehter in a
used box using wires, LED, switch and USB port. Finally, we seal the box and our 3R-POWER

windows as the design of the windows make it difficult for them to reach their hands for
wiping. In doing so will also be hazardous to the students because of the sharp glass blades.
Therefore, this project looks at an alternative to clean the windows using innovative tool.

The average world’s temperature is increasing as a result of intensify industrialization and the
increase of greenhouse gases in atmosphere. This has caused people living in tropical country
like Malaysia to suffer as we are likely to live in hot oven! The second worldwide problem is the
rising amount of garbage, which in turn cause environmental pollution.
Actually, some of the garbage dumped can be reused to manufacture functional gadget. Hence,
our team has come out with an innovative project which solves both issues by making an air
conditioning system out of recycled items.
Our project works on a very simple physics principle but it is very functional as it can blow
out cold refreshing air which brings comfort to the consumers. Besides, we also intend to cut
down the amount of garbage by reusing some of it to make a functional gadget. We also intend
to grasp the golden opportunity of commercialization as presently there is no simple gadget

Our desired project is nature’s cooking with the help of our main source of heat energy which
is the Sun. This can be helpful when our electrical oven or cooker is broken or unusable we
have a hard time to find alternatives for the electrical oven. Obviously buying a new one is

of recyclable items that we just don’t know what to do with it. These types of problems make
us to think in building this solar oven which made out of recyclable items. It is fairly easy to
make and really easy to use. It is probably the best alternative for the electrical oven. The solar
oven is really great because not only it is made out of recyclable items but it also saves energy
because of the solar energy that it uses. It also portable so it is easy to carry anywhere you want.
We hope our project will help people in their daily life at the same time help the environment.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This invention is to promote the use of recyclable items in our everyday life. We hope that through this
creation, we can raise awareness among the general population to use more recyclable items in their lives.
We are also harnessing energy naturally using the concept of green energy with is wave power without
exploiting any energy source. Recycling is associated with the slogan ‘3R’, an abbreviation for ‘reduce,
reuse, recycle.” This slogan is actually regarding waste management, and it encourages us to reduce
wastage, reuse items and recycle materials instead of throwing them away. We are also trying to showcase
the importance of science and technology in our daily lives according to the ratio of 60:40 in which
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) dominates the 60%.

Magic wiper is a device made from wasted materials such as fabric and paper. The main purpose of the
device is for wiping marks made by either pencil, chalk or marker on any surfaces such as whiteboard or
glass. As we all know, wasted materials such fabric and paper have contributed to the highest amount
waste disposed every year especially in school. Therefore, our team is trying to figure out how we can
make use of the wasted materials and turn them into something which can be useful to mankind rather
to see them ended up in dumping site. That was the idea behind the invention of this device.
