METALS AND NON METALS

Metals
A metal is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard, opaque, shiny, and has
good electrical and thermal conductivity.

Chemical property of a metal:

Chemical Property of Metals:

 Usually have 1-3 electrons in their outer shell.

 Lose their valence electrons easily.
 Form oxides that are basic.
 Are good reducing agents.
 Have lower electronegativities.

Non Metals

Nonmetal, substance that does not exhibit such characteristic properties of metals as hardness,
mechanical adaptability, or the ability to conduct electricity.

Chemical property of a nonmetals:

 Usually have 4-8 electrons in their outer shell.

 Gain or share valence electrons easily.
 Form oxides that are acidic.
 Are good oxidizing agents.
 Have higher electronegativities.
