Statement A

During my placement in Primary School P, which consists of 351 students, 35 members

of staff , I observed how service providers apply the values of care in their institution and how

this has a positive impact on service users.

 Promoting rights and choices

Service providers need to make sure that the children’s rights and choices are

respected as it makes them feel empowered, successful and it gives them a sense of freedom.

One of the most important rights is the right to have a voice to help them in bringing their

own value in the world. Service providers regard this right by allowing the children to give

their opinions about certain subjects, to respond in class at the addressed questions. For

instance Teacher X while teaching her class, would ask them for answers and would pick

different children to answer to give everybody the chance to express their opinion. If the

children are not confident enough or too shy she would ask the question differently (e.g. <

How does the small letter p looks different than the big letter P? “ would be changed into “Is

the big letter P over the line and the small p under the line? ),that would somehow contain the

answer in it to make sure that everyone understands.

Another fundamental right is the right to safety and security. This is implemented by

the anti-bullying and health and safety policies of the primary school. Also Teacher X told me

that all the staff received appropriate training in Safeguarding and Child Protection. There are

designated teachers for safeguarding that have the job to ensure that all the children are safe

at all times. By feeling safe in their primary school, children will adopt a positive and safe

behaviour.

One more right that the children are entitled to is the right to wear appropriate uniform

for different weather. When I went on my placement there was cold weather and it was

raining. I have been informed by the principal that the children have the possibility to wear

warm clothes such as coats over their uniform, scarfs and the girls had the option of wearing

trousers instead of skirts if they wanted to.

Beside rights children should have the opportunity to make choices.

In class there was set tables with different activities and games that gave the children the

choice of activity that they want to do so that they do not feel obliged to play any game that

they do not like.
