Scranton School District – Resolution of the Intent to Suspend of the Scranton Board of Education
Scranton, PA – The School District, this evening, passed a resolution approving the intent to suspend 28
professional employees and all non-tenured employees to be effective August 31, 2018. The Board of
Education regrets the necessity of this action, but understands that it is necessary for the survival and
advancement of the district. The suspensions of tenured employees and the non-renewal of non-tenured
contracts result from economic deficit, as well as, need to alter and curtail certain programs.
Before making this decision the Board of Education combed the budget for every and all cost-saving
measures short of personnel actions. The savings from this over haul of the budget was unfortunately not
enough.
In making this difficult decision, the Board made certain the educational impact has been minimized. The
Board assured that all students will continue to receive a full complement of academic programs. No
programs have been eliminated with the exception of library, which will be integrated into the regular
education programs by the classroom teachers. All class sizes will remain to contract standards.
The Board believes that this suspension avoids more drastic educational impacts in the future.
