Cactus Shadows High School Fall 2017

Ms. Stender
Welcome to Freshmen English

About the teacher!

I’m Ms. Stender! I have been teaching for one year. Shocking, I know. That means
it will be a journey for not only you but for me as well. It will be filled with
twists and turns and new learning around ever corner. My class will be like a
roller coaster that you think is going to be terrifying only to be the best
rollercoaster of your life!

I graduated with my Bachelors from the University of Arizona (Beardown!) in

English and Creative Writing. One year later, I received my Masters in Education
though the UofA (Beardown...Again!). I hope to get to my Ph.D. and become the
best teacher ever! Or at least a teacher that is able to be effective.

I love to read and write and head bang at

concerts! Yes, you read that correctly. I am
part nerd and part metal head. All music is
good music. You will hear all varieties of
tunes while you are in my room. Prepare to
have your dancing shoes on.

I look forward to meeting you all! This year

is going to be a great year! My good year
senses are tingling. If you ever need any
help, guidance, tutoring, or want to know
why people love books so much, talk to me!
My door is always open.

Let’s have a great year!

Expectations:
Come to class prepared: Have homework
finished, stories read, as well as have all
supplies needed for the day

Be on time: You can’t learn all that you need to

if you’re walking in on only half the lesson

Be Respectful: You have to give respect to earn

respect. Please put away all electronics, be
open to what others have to say, keep talking
to a minimum

Be Willing: Not all learning is going to be fun,

but if you’re open and willing to learn what is
needed, then it will be worth it.

Believe In yourself: You can do it. I wouldn’t be

here if I didn’t think that you had any chance
of success. You have all the ability you need to
become as successful as you wish to be!

Classroom Procedures Spring 2016

If you were absent, you have two days to complete the work; otherwise that
missing work will be marked as a zero.
If you are absent, you may get the work from the rainbow folders hung up on
the wall. Grab the papers from the day labeled folder that you were absent on.

If you arrive late to class you must have a pass from a teacher or the office.
There should be no reasons to have unexcused lateness. If you need to use the
restroom or get a drink before class, ask me first. We can talk.

Please ask to use the bathroom. Everyone will be issued six bathroom passes
for the semester. These will be needed to use the restroom. They are not
reusable and nonrefundable. Use them wisely.

There is no need to turn in your work late. Every day that the work is missing,
the assignment grade will go down by 10% every day. If you feel that you have a
valid reason to turn in the work late, you may write to me a five-paragraph
essay on why the work is late. This could help your grading on the late
assignment.

Participation is awesome! Well, you may not think so but I love when students
participate. If you participate in class (raising your hand, answering questions,
reading out loud, participating in discussions) you will receive participation
credit for the day. These points go towards your final grade (grade info is
below). These points can be taken away if there is any misbehavior during class
(but that won’t happen because no one wants to loose anything in life).

Please leave your phones in your backpack, headphones out of your ears, all
music turned off. There will be times when I allow it to be used, but until that
time comes, leave it away.

There is a cell phone hotel at the front of the room. You may plug in your
phone to charge it at the beginning of class using the outlets provided. Once
the phone is checked into the hotel, you may not touch it again until the end of
class.

If you bring out your phone, or go to check it while it’s checked into the hotel.
You will place the phone in cell phone jail, on my desk, until the end of class.

If negative behaviors with cell phones continue, they will be banned from class.
You will then have to leave your phones in your locker or with a friend outside
of class.

Consequences Both Good and Bad

Classroom Procedures
Sometimes we mess up, and that’s okay. But if you purposely keep
messing up, there will be a price to pay!

First Offense: Verbal warning

Second Offense: Conversation between student and teacher
Third Offense: Parents become involved
Fourth Offense: A written referral
Fifth Offense: Principal's Office/ Potential for suspension

There are also times when we don’t mess up and we always do what
we are told. I see those things too! If you are doing well in the class
(doing all assignments, following rules, being respectful, keeping
your phone away and music off) I will reward you with a positive
consequence.

Rewards include: Extra bathroom passes, excused homework pass,

candy, participation points for the day or even a sticker.
