Planning
Planning: Definition

Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to
achieve a desired goal. ..... Also, planning has a specific process and is necessary for multiple
user groups (particularly in fields such as management, business, etc.). In each field there are
different types of plans that help companies achieve efficiency and effectiveness. An
important aspect of planning is the relationship it holds to forecasting. ..... Planning
combines forecasting with preparation of scenarios and how to react to
them. Planning is one of the most important project management and time
management techniques. .....

A plan is like a map. When following a plan, he can always see how much he have
progressed towards his project goal and how far he is from his destination.

Background information
Planning: Complete Definition from WIKIPEDIA
Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired
goal. It involves the creation and maintenance of a plan, such as psychological aspects that require conceptual
skills. There are even a couple of tests to measure someone’s capability of planning well. As such, planning is a
fundamental property of intelligent behavior. Also, planning has a specific process and is necessary for
multiple occupations (particularly in fields such as management, business, etc.). In each field there are
different types of plans that help companies achieve efficiency and effectiveness. An important aspect of
planning is the relationship it holds to forecasting. Forecasting can be described as predicting what
the future will look like, whereas planning predicts what the future should look like for multiple scenarios.
Planning combines forecasting with preparation of scenarios and how to react to them.
Planning is one of the most important project management and time management
techniques. Planning is preparing a sequence of action steps to achieve some specific goal. If a person
does it effectively, he can reduce much the necessary time and effort of achieving the goal.

A plan is like a map. When following a plan, he can always see how much he have progressed towards
his project goal and how far he is from his destination.

How In-Memory Technology Helps
Planning and Analysis
How In-Memory Technology Helps Planning
and Analysis
The problem
Ÿ Due to ever increasing data volumes, financial teams have limited time for
analysis
Ÿ Performance implications due to data volume size and/or complex
planning calculations limit the ability to plan at very granular levels/run
complex scenarios and allocations

How in-memory solves the problem

Ÿ Drive rapid consensus by quickly simulating “what-if?” scenarios with
multiple versions of plans and large volumes of data
Ÿ Enable planning and forecasting applications based on real time
operational data combined with analytics
Ÿ Gain immediate access to relevant information and react faster based on
real time information
Ÿ Make the impossible possible – ask questions you were afraid to ask due
to technical constraints in getting the answers

The Need for Speed and Challenge of Big Data

Accelerating the “speed of intelligence,” as Ms. Hughes

puts it, is the finance function’s fundamental challenge

“The benefit of being able to push data quickly is if you

get the right data and the right collection of data to the
decision maker more rapidly, you’re going to speed up
decisions that change that outcome…”

— Hazel Hughes, SVP of finance and business

control for the Education Group at Houghton
Mifflin Harcourt, in “Accelerating the Speed of
Intelligence for Fast and Flexible Forecasting.”
(CFO Research Services, 2011).

Getting Others Engaged

“The new devices that are coming on the market,

like the tablets and iPhones, will enable us to build
a system in the future that will more easily take
advantage of the input from every employee.”

— Anders Pehrsson, Vice President and Group Controller, Atlas Copco

“This should not be only the finance department;

people sometimes believe that budgets or rolling
forecasts are only done by finance. It should be
done by [all] the people involved.”

— Troy Parwata, Finance Director of Tigaraksa Satria

Overall Office Client Strategy for BPC

• The EPM plug-in and the Analysis plug-in are part of the so-called convergence client Analysis
for Office 2.1+.

• The EPM plug-in will remain the Office client for the BPC standard model. We will continuously
improve it for this usage type.

• The Analysis plug-in is the recommended go-to client for the BPC embedded model. We will
continuously enhance its functionality to also cover the EPM plug-in use cases as well as
possible (see the latest roadmap on slide 9 for details).

• The EPM plug-in will continue working on the embedded model, however there won’t be
functional enhancements (see slide 7 and 8 for the list of known limitations). Due to these
limitations customers should use the EPM add-in on the embedded model only in exceptional
cases. New projects should use the Analysis plug-in from the beginning.

Analysis Plug-in on BPC Embedded

Analysis Plug-in is recommended client for BPC Embedded

§ Full BW meta data support, performance-optimized
§ Full pivot table handling
§ Full planning support: new lines, planning functions/sequences
§ Support of work status and business process flow
§ Will be enhanced to cover EPM report scenarios (see roadmap on slide 9 for details)

Major differences compared to EPM Plug-In

§ Formatting
§ EPM uses formatting sheet, Analysis uses Excel styles for specific artefacts (hierarchy levels, input-ready cells etc.)
§ Analysis uses conditional formatting for color-coding of threshold values
§ Direct Input/Member recognition
§ Other approach for report design (e.g. design panel, context menu, filter dialog)
§ Offline Planning
§ Offline planning in Analysis plug-in is only possible via a workaround (see How-To paper)

EPM Plug-in on BPC Embedded – Gaps (1/2)

The following list presents the key limitations of EPM plug-in on top of BPC embedded model which will not be
removed (due to architectural reasons). Only use EPM Plug-In on BPC embedded if you can accept these
limitations in your project.

General Limitations
§ Performance limitations apply (e.g. opening workbooks, value help)

Following BW Features are not supported

§ Exceptions, Conditions, Variants, Report-Report-Interface, Universal Display Hierarchy, ad-hoc currency conversion at
runtime, hierarchical measures
§ Reporting on query views, InfoProvider, aggregation levels (only queries are supported in EPM)
§ Limitations for new line support in planning
§ Formatting limitations (e.g. date as measure, internal/external format)
§ Some BW query settings are not honored (e.g. display totals with only one member, do not display leaves for inner nodes )
§ Default values from query definition are not synchronized with EPM filters
§ Possible issues with variable re-prompting (losing navigation state)

© 2014 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. Public 42

EPM Plug-in on BPC Embedded – Gaps (2/2)

BPC Embedded Gaps compared to BPC standard with focus on frontend

§ EVDRE (BPC standard only)
§ Data Manager (BPC standard only), but replaced by Planning sequences and functions
§ Insert comments (only DataStore Object comments approach available (text key figure) for inline comments
in EPM reports).
§ Insert member - same experience as for BPC standard, but linked to BEx query settings: by default, it only
retrieves booked values. Using “insert new line” switches to “all values in master data table”
§ Calculate Parent in Hierarchy (based on Account Type property)
§ Drill-through not available
§ EPM formulas like EPMDocument, EPMDocumentList, EPMCellContextDocument, etc... - BPC Web in
embedded model not supporting them.
§ Publish to Library is not supported
§ Metadata and master data cache is only available for queries without variables

SAP BusinessObjects Planning and Consolidation 10.1, version for SAP
NetWeaver
SAP Cloud 4 Analytics

Positioning
Introduction: Please Read

• This presentation is intended to provide guidance in the positioning of SAP Cloud for Planning (C4P) and
SAP BPC.
• SAP Cloud for Planning is NOT a legal successor to any existing SAP planning solution. We continue to
invest in and actively market the current SAP BPC applications, in particular SAP BPC NW.
• Specific BPC Use Cases do exist, which SAP Cloud for Planning is not designed to support and therefore
should not be positioned. If cloud desired then position recommended solution on the HANA Enterprise
Cloud.
• Please also refer to the FAQ which is located on the EPM Jam site at
https://jam4.sapjam.com/wiki/show/fbq0PYH0ygab7BVb9QYtQp for additional information.
