PNEUMATIC TEST PROCEDURE

Document No:SS-QP-008 Revision No:02 Revision Date: 23.11.2015

1.0 Scope

1.1 This procedure describes the pressure testing method for Pneumatic Testing at shop
and designated work sites.
1.2 Pneumatic test detailed in this procedure may be used in lieu of the standard
hydrostatic test prescribed in UG-99 & Part 8 para. 8.3 of Section VIII Division 2 (as
applicable) for vessels, also under paragraph 3.4.10 procedure for Pneumatic test of
RF Pad shall also used;
a) That are so designed and/or supported that they cannot be safely filled with water.
b) Not readily dried, those are to be used in services were traces of the testing liquid
cannot be tolerated

2.0 Reference documents:

2.1 ASME Section VIII Divisions 1.

2.2 Applicable Drawing.

3.0 Procedure

3.1 Responsibilities

3.1.1 Production Supervisor is responsible for the followings:

a) Preparation of the test items for pressure testing.
b) Ensure that during the test only essential personal are present in the work area.
c) Ensure that the work area shall be suitably cordoned or otherwise isolated such
that unrelated personal do not stray into it.

3.1.2 Quality Control Engineer is responsible for the followings:

a) Witnessed the item being tested.
b) Wherever necessary, for arranging witness by the Authorized Inspector.
c) Verify that the NDE and all hot work area has been completed and accepted to
the satisfaction of the Client/TPI before releasing the item for pressure testing.

3.2 Equipment

3.2.1 The test equipment shall be in accordance with the applicable client’s specification
and shall be adequate to provide necessary test pressure at a safe rate of increases
and it should have valid calibration certificates.

3.2.2 All components of the test system shall be rated to perform satisfactory at
minimum test pressure.

3.2.3 Pressure and temperature recording devices may be used to record the
temperatures and pressure on a continuous basis during the test period.

PNEUMATIC TEST PROCEDURE

Document No:SS-QP-008 Revision No:02 Revision Date: 23.11.2015

3.3 Preparation for Pneumatic test

3.3.1 Quality Control Engineer shall verify that all welding and related Non-destructive
testing has been satisfactorily completed and accepted to the satisfaction of the
Authorized Inspector before taking up the item for test. The item should normally
not have coating applied prior to test at weld joints.

3.3.2 Before Pneumatic testing, the full length of following weld shall be examined by PT
examination (as per PT procedure) for the purpose of detecting cracks.
a. All welds around opening / welds.
b. All attachments weld, including welds attaching non-pressure parts to pressure
parts, having a throat thickness greater than 6mm.
c. All long seams &circumferential seam.

3.3.3 Pressure gauge shall be graduated over a range of about double the intended
maximum test pressure, but in no case shall the range be less than 1,5 times & not
more than 4 times the test pressure. The pressure gauge used in the test system
shall be positioned such that it is easily visible to the operator during the test and
the pressure achieved can be read off easily.

3.3.4 All lines and appurtenances, which do not form part of the test system, shall be
removed or otherwise isolated from the test system before the test.

3.3.5 Blind flanges & gaskets shall be installed, as necessary.

3.3.6 The metal temperature during test shall be maintained at least 17° C above
minimum design metal temperature.
3.3.7 Wherever possible, steps should be taken to ensure that the items are provided
with an adequate cover such that the metal temperature does not rise significantly.
3.3.8 1) Vessels shall not be painted or otherwise coated either internally or externally prior
to the Pneumatic pressure test.
2) Vessel for lethal service shall not be painted or otherwise coated or lined either
internally or externally prior to the Pneumatic pressure test.

3.4 Testing & Acceptance Criteria

3.4.1 The pressure in the vessel shall be gradually increased to not more than one half of
the test pressure. Therefore the test pressure shall be increased in steps of
approximately one-tenth of the test pressure until the required test pressure has
been reached.

3.4.2 The test pressure shall be held at this point to verify that it is stabilized. If the client
has specified a minimum holding time, this shall be maintained.
The start of such holding period shall commence from the time that stabilization
has achieved.

3.4.3 Then the test pressure shall be reduced to a valve equal to the test pressure divided
by 1.1 and held for a sufficient time to permit the inspection of the vessel.

3.4.4 Quality Control Engineer shall record the start time of the test.

3.4.5 At this point, the Quality Control Engineer shall inspect the vessel to detect leaks,
all weld joints and connections shall be checked visually. Soap solution may be
applied to enhance the leak visibility.

3.4.6 If leaks are detected at flanges, the pressure shall be reduced to Zero, the
concerned flanges tightened and retested.

3.4.7 If leaks are detected at weld, the test item is considered to be filed in the test and
suitable repairs shall be undertaken in accordance with approved repair
procedures.

3.4.8 If there is leak observed outside the test system (such as at a compressor
connection or outlet valve) and it is conclusively verified that no leak are present on
the test item, the pressure may be increased as necessary before or during the
holding time to verify to ensure that pressure during the holding time and / or the
inspection time does not becomes less than the specified.

3.4.9 After completing the test, the air shall be release from the test system and the
system shall be cleaned and dried. While releasing air, care shall be exercised to
prevent formation of vacuum.
3.4.10 Pneumatic testing is carried out for RF pad weld joints from inside & outside at
test pressure specified in approved drawing by using soap solution.
3.4.11 The equipment shall be accepted provided there is no leakage & no deformation
3.5 Reporting

3.5 This shall be done on Hydrostatic / Pneumatic Pressure Test Certificate. Other
format as may be approved or specified in Contractual Specification may be used as
alternatives but as a minimum, the following items shall appear
 Calibration reference of the pressure indicating gauges
 Calibration reference of pressure and temperature records
 Date and time of the test
 Procedure No.
 Provision for acceptance endorsement by QC Engineer and the Client/TPI.
 Test Pressure
 Test temperature of metal
