1. The pressure p of the atmosphere at height h above ground level is given by 𝑝 = 𝑝0 𝑒 −ℎ/𝑐 , where
𝑝0 is the pressure at ground level and c is a constant. Determine the rate of change of pressure
with height when 𝑝0 = 1.013×105 pascals and c=6.05×104 at 1450 metres.

2. At any time t seconds the distance x metres of a particle moving in a straight line from a fixed point
is given by 𝑥 = 𝑡 2 + ln(1 − 2𝑡 − 𝑡 2 ). Determine (a) the initial velocity and acceleration (b) the
velocity and acceleration after 2 s (c) the time when the velocity is zero.

3. Determine the turning points on the curve y = 3 sin x −4 cos x in the range x =0 to x =2π radians,
and distinguish between them.

4. Determine the turning points and nature of the curve at those point for the curve 𝑦 = 6𝑥 3 +
17𝑥 2 − 14𝑥 + 30 .

5. Find the height and radius of a cylinder open at top of volume 250 cm3 which has the least surface
area.

6. Find the equation of the tangent and the equation of the normal for the curve 𝑦 = 3𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 + 4
at the point (1, 4).

7. An open box is to be made from a rectangular piece of cardboard that is 8 feet by 3 feet by cutting
out four equal squares from the corners and then folding up the flaps. What length of the side of a
square will yield the box with the largest volume?

8. Show that the relation between the length a and width b of a rectangle which can inscribed in a
circle with maximum area.

9. Determine the approximate increase in (a) the volume, and (b) the surface area of a sphere of radius
r cm if x increases from 10.0 cm to 10.05 cm.

10. Find 𝑧𝑥𝑥 and 𝑧𝑦𝑦 . Show that 𝑧𝑥𝑦 = 𝑧𝑦𝑥 and find the value of 𝑧𝑥𝑦 for the following functions

(a) 𝑧 = 𝑥 2 cos(2𝑥 − 3𝑦),

(b) 𝑧 = (𝑥 + 𝑦)( cos(𝑥 + 𝑦) + sin(𝑥 + 𝑦)),
(c) 𝑧 = (𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 ) / (𝑥 + 𝑦 + 1),
(d) 𝑧 = (𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 𝑦 3 ) sin(𝑥𝑦),
(e) 𝑧 = sin−1 (𝑥 / 𝑦)
