Course Name: Geotechnical Engineering- I

Q. 1 A soil sample with a grain specific gravity of 2.67 was filled in 1000 ml
container in the loosest possible state and the dry weight of the sample was
found to be 14.75 N. It was then filled at the densest state obtainable and the
weight was found to be 17.70 N. The void ratio of the soil in its natural state was
0.63. Determine the density index in the natural state. (59.6%)

Q.2 The dry unit weight of a sand sample in the loosest state is 13.34 KN/m 3 and
in the densest state, it is 21.19 KN/m3. Determine the density index of this sand
when it has the porosity of 33 %. Assume the grain specific gravity as 2.68 (56.8%)

Q.3 The undisturbed soil at a borrow pit has a water content of 15% , void ratio of
0.60 and Gs = 2.70. The soil from the borrow pit is to be used for the construction
of an embankment with a finished volume of 40,000 cu m. The specifications for
the embankment require a water content of 18% and dry unit weight of 1.76 g/cc.
Calculate the quantity of soil required to be excavated from the borrow pit for the
construction of the embankment. What would be its weight. What is the weight
of the embankment soil. (80960 t, 83072 t)

Q.4 A 1000cc core cutter weighing 946.80 g was used to find out the in-situ unit
weight of an embankment. The weight of core cutter filled with soil was noted to
be 2770.60 g. Lab tests on the sample indicated a water content of 10.45 percent
and G = 2.65. Determine the bulk unit weight, dry unit weight, void ratio and
degree of saturation of the sample. (1.82g/cc, 1.65 g/cc, 0.61, 45.4%)
If the embankment becomes saturated due to rains, calculate the water content
and the saturated unit weight. (Assume there is no volume change on saturation).
Solve using formulae and also, with the help of three phase diagram relationships.

Q.5 Explain the sedimentation analysis in detail. Discuss hydrometer method and
corrections required in the same. Use diagrams where necessary.
