ESci 116n – Differential Equations

First Long Examination

Instructions: Handwrite your answers in separate sheets of paper. After answering all the
questions, attach photos of your solution sheets to this file, with one photo per page. Include
the given, required, and solution in your computations and box your final answers. Upon
submission, upload the .pdf version of this file to the VSUEE.

a. 𝑦 =𝑥+𝐶
b. 𝑦 = 𝑥2 + 𝐶
c. 𝑥 = 𝑦2 + 𝐶
d. 𝑦2 = 𝑥2 + 𝐶
e. 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 𝐶

2. If the initial condition is (0, 6), what is the range of the solution curve 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) for 𝑥 ≥ 0 ?

a. [0, ∞)
b. [0, 6]
c. (4, 6]
d. (0, 6]
e. [4, 6]

3. Use Euler’s method with three steps of equal size to approximate 𝑓(3.5) for the equation
𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑥
= 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 1 and the initial condition of 𝑦(2) = −0.5.

5. A metal bar at a temperature of 115°F is placed in a room at a constant temperature of

5°F. If after 25 minutes, the temperature of the bar is 60°F, find (a) the time it will take the
bare to reach a temperature of 30°F and (b) the temperature of the bar after 45 minutes.

6. The population of India in 1990 was 873.3 million. In 2000, their population boomed to
1.057 billion. Predict the country’s population in 2010 and 2020 using the exponential
growth model of population growth. Then considering that the actual population of India in
2010 is 1.234 billion, correct your predictions for India’s population in 2020 using the
logistic model of population growth. If India’s annual growth rate is 3.658%%, calculate the
carrying capacity of India according to this model.

7. The productivity of a rice thresher is given by the equation: 𝑥𝑦 ′ = 𝑥 − 2𝑦, where 𝑥 is the
percent in losses and 𝑦 is the revenue in pesos. Determine the revenue function if the rice
thresher yields P30,000 in revenue with 10% losses. Using the revenue function,
determine how much money would have been earned if the percent losses was 8%?

9. Solve for the solution for the equation: (2𝑥 2 𝑦 − 2𝑥 3 ) + (4𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 𝑦 + 2𝑥𝑦 2 )𝑦′ = 0 with the
condition of 𝑦(1) = 3.

10. Solve for the solution for the equation: (𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑦)𝑑𝑥 + (2 𝑥 2 + 4𝑦) 𝑑𝑦 = 0 with the
condition of 𝑦(2) = 4.

11. Solve for the solution for the equation: 𝑦 ′ + 𝑥𝑦 = 6𝑥√𝑦 with the condition of 𝑦(3) = 6.

13. A steel load weighing 5 lb is dropped from a height of 4000 ft with no velocity. As it falls,
the load encounters air resistance numerically equal to v/7.5 (in pounds), where v denotes
the velocity of the load (in feet per second). Find the (a) the limiting velocity for the load
and (b) the time required for the load to hit the ground

solution containing 0.3 kg of salt per liter is poured into the tank at the rate of 15 liters/min.
while the well-stirred mixture leaves the tank at the same rate. Find the (a) the amount of
salt in the tank at any time t and (b) the time at which the mixture in the tank contains 10
