3rd Grade Research Project Lesson Plans
General Goal(s):
Language Arts:
W.3.6
With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using
keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
W.3.7
Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.

W.3.8

Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take
brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

Speaking and Listening objective:

SL.3.4

Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and
relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

Technology:

2.C.5.1

Use digital resources to research about places, people, and world cultures.

Social Studies:

H1.3.3A

Learn about current or past individuals around the world and discuss their contributions.
Specific Objectives:

Students will research online a current or past individual from the United States and discuss their

contributions to society. Students will, then, produce a Power Point presentation about the

individual.

Required Materials:

Paper

Pencil

Computer

Internet Access

Power Point

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):

What is a leader? (class discussion)

Teacher will begin with having the students write on journal on the question, “Who are some

famous leaders that you know in the United States?”

Step-By-Step Procedures:

Day 1

 Students will be arranged in groups to work together for the project.

 Students will pick from a list of famous leaders or choose their own upon teacher

approval.

 Give students overview on online research and the importance of safe and reputable

websites (using .gov and .edu sites over less reputable sources).

 Teacher explains the requirements of the research project.

 Teacher explains how to research for the famous leader and how to choose a website to

use for their information.

 Teacher hands out graphic organizer and brings students to the computer lab for research.

Day 2

 Explains Power Point criteria which is a total of 4 slides. One slide for their title (includes

famous leader’s name) and the name of all students on the group, the next slide included

a picture of their famous leader and birth and death dates, the final 2-3 slides include a

contribution to society and a picture that goes along with the contribution.

 Explains how to use Power Point and how to insert pictures, customize, and add

animations.

 Shows examples of Power Point slides for students to use as a reference.

 Makes sure students bring their graphic organizer. Bring students to the computer lab to

work on their Power Point presentations.

Day 3

 Teacher goes over presentation etiquette and has students present projects to the class.

Plan for Independent Practice:

 Students will research in groups an individual or their choice from the United States and

take short notes using a graphic organizer about the individual’s contributions.

 After, researching the students will use Power Point to make a presentation of the

information.

 Then, students will present the Power Point in groups to the class.
 Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Teacher has students reflect by writing in their

journals with the question, “What do you think a leader is now?” Then, students will be

asked if they would like to share their journals with the class.

Assessment Based on Objectives:

Possible Connections to Other Subjects: Science could also be used for this project. The students

could research a plant, animal, etc. and make a Power Point presentation about it.

Student with special needs: The student with special needs in the classroom will be seated in

close proximity to the teacher so the teacher may assist him/her at all times. The student will be

given bouncy bands attached to the chair to help the student stay in their chair and help get rid of

anxiety. The student with special needs will be pared with typical peers so the typical peers can

be a role model for the special needs child. The child will be given the accommodation to only

research the life and death dates and one accomplishment from their famous leader. Another

accommodation will be that any websites will be read to the student if they have a deficit in

reading.
