Scene one: Int. Harker Residence – Night

Chris is laying alone on his bed listening to music (If I Die
Young - The Band Perry - Cover by Michael Henry & Justin
Robinett), his eyes are shut. He is totally still.
His father (Barry) storms in the room and rips his headphones
off.

BARRY
(Angrily and somewhat drunk)
Why did I get a phone call from school today saying you’d been
in another fight?
Chris shrinks back in fear.
CHRIS
Victor was picking on a year 7. I had to help dad.
BARRY
(Angrily)
What did you just say?
CHRIS
(Meekly)
Sorry, sir.
Pause
BARRY
(Trying to hold in his anger)
Arms.
CHRIS
Please don’t
He picks up a belt next to him
BARRY
I said, arms.
Chris starts to tear up as he rolls up his sleeves and raises
his arms up.
BARRY
Last time, I gave you four lashes. Apparently you haven’t
learned your lesson. So, five lashes.
The camera looks at the bedroom door and pulls away. The sound
of the belt is heard striking him 5 times, each time followed
by a yelp from Chris. His mum is seen with marks from where
she has been crying. She shudders at every hit.
Chris is left crying on his bed, bruises on his arms. Fade to
black.

Scene two: INT. Harker Residence – table - morning

The family is all sat around the table. They are all eating
cereal, but Barry also has a glass of whiskey. Chris is
emotionless. His mother is shaken up and Barry doesn’t care.
BARRY
You better behave today, boy. Wouldn’t want to add six more to
that collection.
(He gestures to Chris’ arms and smiles menacingly)
Chris says nothing.
BARRY
You deaf boy? You were spoken to.
CHRIS
Yes sir.
BARRY
Good lad. Now, off you go. Wouldn’t want to be late for school
again.
Chris gets up and leaves the table, he grabs his bag and
walks out the door.
Scene 3: EXT – montage of Chris going to school – walking
to the bus stop, getting on the bus - daytime
Chris remains emotionless and pale while on his journey. He
doesn’t end up at school, instead he walks through town. To a
coffee shop.

Scene 4: INT. Coffee shop - daytime

CHRIS
Hot chocolate please.
He makes the drink
BARISTA
Shouldn’t you be in school?
CHRIS
Inset day.
BARISTA
With a smile
Lucky you.
CHRIS
He throws the money on the counter and takes the drink.
Thanks.
He walks to the back of the shop and sits alone. He slowly
drinks his hot chocolate, remembering past issues with his
father (flashback to earlier). He puts the drink down, only
half drunk and storms out.

Scene 5: EXT. – Chris is walking through town, he hears his

dad in his head
He stops abruptly.
CHRIS
(Desperately and confused)
Leave me alone!
The people look at him confused
Chris runs away in fear and embarrassment.

Scene 6: EXT. – Chris is hiding away in an underpass – sunset

– parallel with his parents at home
Chris is sat with his head in his hands, sobbing to himself.
VICKY
Have you heard from Chris?
BARRY
Should I care if I have?
VICKY
I’m worried about him Barry. He might have run off again.
BARRY
He’ll be sorry if he has, the little bugger.
Vicky walks into the kitchen and phones Chris.
Chris looks at his phone as it rings, he ignores it.
Vicky texts him constantly, no reply.
Chris gets up and starts to walk away. He stops briefly and
then walks on with conviction.

Scene 7: EXT. – Chris is somewhere high up - night

Chris is stood overlooking the city, he has tears in his eyes.
CHRIS
(Getting continually worked up – fast breathing and shouting)
I can’t keep this up. I’m so tired of running.
Pause
No one cares about me! You don’t know what it’s like to have
every day of your life be pain! I wake up afraid; afraid that
I’m gonna get punched or slapped or strangled or whipped with
a belt.
Pause
Every day I just slog along. Left, right, left, right.
All this and where am I going? Every step is one step
closer to the end so why can’t I just take a short cut?
Pause
This life means nothing! No one will care if I die. Open
casket but no one will see my face cause no one will be there
to see it.
No one.
Pause
I refuse to crawl through this life when I’m not living at
all.
Chris closes his eyes (close up) and becomes expressionless.
JESS
How?
Chris’ eyes burst open and he turns around to see a girl stood
there.
CHRIS
How what?
JESS
How can your life be so bad, that you’d want it to stop?
CHRIS
You wouldn’t understand!
JESS
Humour me.
CHRIS
My father. He hurts me, and my stupid mother doesn’t do
anything! I just can’t keep going.
JESS
“But as for you, be strong and do not give up for your work
will be rewarded”.
CHRIS
What?
JESS
2 Chronicles, chapter 15, verse 7. It’s one of the things
that gets me through the day.
CHRIS
What does it even mean?
JESS
It means, have hope. It’ll get better. There are people out
there that can help you. They can get you away from your
parents and give you a new home. Or they can give your family
help so that you can heal together.
Chris looks confused and emotional
JESS
How about you come away from there, and why don’t we go get
some food?
Chris nods but he is clearly shaken up. He steps towards Jess.
CHRIS
Thank you.
Chris hugs Jess
Thank you.
He starts to cry
JESS
It’s ok. You’ll be ok.

Scene 8: INT. Chris and Jess are sat in McDonald’s – Night

They can be seen talking inside through the window. Chris is
explaining his story to Jess.
Narration
CHRIS
I told Jess everything that night. Every incident I could
remember with my father. It flowed out of me like a broken
dam. It was nice to have someone to listen. Not someone that
sat there and nodded, no; someone that genuinely
listened. I was able to take all my pain and just let it
out.
That was the best conversation of my life. I was
liberated from all that built up pain, and for the first
time in a long time, I felt happy.

Scene 9: INT. Harker residence – night

Barry is stood at the window, starring out. Blue flashing
lights are seen shining through the window. He downs what’s
left of his whiskey and a knock is heard at the door.
Scene 10: EXT. Park – Daytime
Chris is sat on a park bench alone. His father approaches and
sits next to him on the bench.
BARRY
I don’t expect you to forgive me Chris. It may have been a
year since I left for rehab but I want you to know, I am truly
sorry. I caused you so much pain and I am sorry. I can’t take
it back but I would go through hell if it took away that pain.
Pause
CHRIS
(Quietly)
I forgive you.
BARRY
(Shocked)
What?
CHRIS
(Carefully and slowly)
I have had a year to hate you and wish to never see you again.
Our time here is precious and short and I refuse to waste this
gift of life hating people. Proverbs chapter 10 verse 12
“Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.”
So I forgive you.
Barry gives him a confused look.
BARRY
Oh my boy.
Barry hugs Chris. He tears up.
I will never ever hurt you again. I promise.
They hug as the camera pulls away.
Roll credits.

Clearances and Confirmations
You need confirmation emails from everyone that is featuring in your video.
Please screenshot these emails including the dates and times they are
agreeing to paste them below.
Contingency Plan
What are your plans for if something goes wrong? What back
up actors, locations and equipment do you have?
Actors
If my first actor for Chris becomes suddenly unavailable, I have a second
actor (Ed Hudec) available should I need him. I also have a backup for Barry.
Equipment
Should something go wrong with the camera, I have a second camera
available. I also have spare batteries so I will be able to film constantly.
Should the microphone break, I can use the built in microphone of the
camera. Alternatively, I could hire out a microphone if my microphone
breaks before shooting begins.
Locations
If Kidwells Park becomes unavailable, there are several other nearby parks
which could also work (e.g. Ockwells Park).
If we are not able to film at Sainsbury’s, particularly in the car park, then there
is another multi-story car park in Maidenhead which can be used - Nicholsons
Car Park.
There are several other underpasses in Maidenhead which I can use if the
one I am currently planning on becomes unavailable.
If we are not allowed to film in McDonald’s, then there are several other fast
food places that we can use in Maidenhead (e.g. KFC or Subway). Though
this shouldn’t be a problem as I won’t actually be filming in the building, but
rather through the window.
