1. A bronze bar is fastened between a steel bar and an aluminum bar as shown in Fig. 1. Axial
loads are applied at the positions indicated. Find the largest value of P that will not exceed an
overall deformation of 3.0 mm, or the following stresses: 140 MPa in the steel, 120 MPa in
the bronze, and 80 MPa in the aluminum. Assume that the assembly is suitably braced to
prevent buckling. Use Est = 200 GPa, Eal = 70 GPa, and Ebr = 83 GPa.

2. A cylindrical steel pressure vessel 400 mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 20 mm,
is subjected to an internal pressure of 4.5 MN/m2. (a) Calculate the tangential and
longitudinal stresses in the steel. (b) To what value may the internal pressure be
increased if the stress in the steel is limited to 120 MN/m2? (c) If the internal pressure
were increased until the vessel burst, sketch the type of fracture that would occur.

3. A tubular steam boiler with hemispherical ends (hemispherical) have an average

internal radius of 60 cm and is made of metal steel with a yield stress value / yield =
400 MPa. The maximum internal pressure used is 20 MPa. If it does not happen
yielding on steam boilers, determine the minimum thickness of the steam boiler:

- According to the Tresca yield criterion

- According to the Von Mises yield criterion

4. Hitung kerja elastis dan plastis untuk merubah bentuk kawat alumunium hingga
patah. Dimensi awal  awal = 10 mm, panjang 250 mm. Diketahui bahwa modulus
young’s = 670 KN/mm2, yield stress 75 N/mm2 , koefisien pengerasan regangan n =
0,25 , UTS = 135 N/mm2 , dimensi akhir =  akhir = 5 mm. Berapa persen kerja
elastis dari kerja totalnya ?
5. The drive shaft of an automobile is to be designed as thin-walled tube steel. The
engine delivers 150 hp when the shaft is turning at 1500 rev/min. Determine the
minimum thickness of tube’s wall if the outer diameter is 63.5 mm. The steel has an
allowable shear stress ζallow = 7 ksi. Note that:
