Acceleration Word Problem #1

by: Cassie, Julia, and Maya

3. Questions for the Readers:

1. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide an example of it in the article
provided.
Deceleration is the decrease of speed or rate. An example of this was when Emily was
running toward the water at 8 m/s and slowed down to catch her breathe and went at 2
m/s.

2. Which (object) in the article provided has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to
the other (item)? Provide evidence to support your answer.
When Emily threw a sand ball at Gerard’s castle, it flew at 2 m/s in just 3 seconds. It
accelerates at 2/3m/s2. When Gerard got angry, he threw water and killed her sandcastle at
a rate of 4 meters/second. This accelerated at 4m/s2.

3. What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to imply (a person) that an object
is at rest, as in it’s not moving?
The phrase that the writer used to let the reader know an object was at rest was when
Emily picked up a sandball to throw at Gerard and looked at it for a few seconds. This
implies that the ball is not moving.

4. What (two) pieces of information did the writer include in the article that are irrelevant
and/or misleading to the reader, as in they are not useful in calculating either speed or
acceleration?
One irrelevant fact was that they both only had one hour to build the sandcastle at the
beach that day. This contributes no valuable information to the story line. Also, it states at
Emily gets there in 30 seconds to begin digging through the wet sand. Again, this convey no
useful information to the story.

Water Bottle Flipping Competition

by: Ben L, Samantha and Biana

3. Questions for the Readers:

5. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide an example of it in the article
provided.
Deceleration is the decrease of speed or rate. This is represented when Liza flips the bottle
6 meters high in four seconds, but it hits the ceiling and slows down, falling at 1 m/s.

6. Which (object) in the article provided has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to
the other (object)? Provide evidence to support your answer.
In the article, it says that Spencer’s bottle flew 4 meters in seconds starting from a
standstill. 4m/s-0m/s➗2s. This equates the 2m/s2. While Liza’s bottle was thrown at 6
meters in four seconds. 6m/s-0m/s➗4s. This translates to 1.5m/s2. As you can see, Spencer’s
and Liza’s bottle were flipped at different rates with Spencers bottle accelerating 0.5m/s2
faster than Liza’s.

7. What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to imply (a person) that an object
is at rest, as in it’s not moving?
The term deceleration is used when something is at rest. The term/phrase the writer used to
show something is at rest is, “without any prior movement” referring that Spencer’s bottle
was not moving prior to his bottle flip.

8. What (two) pieces of information did the writer include in the article that are irrelevant
and/or misleading to the reader, as in they are not useful in calculating either speed or
acceleration?
The two pieces of information that is insignificant is that Spencer is 14 years old, Liza is 16
years old, and that the competition was the 10th annual in Boston.
