February in Review & Upcoming March Events

Our Valentine’s Day Math Monsters! (They ate our valentines after we worked on their surface areas)

It is March and as of Friday, we will be ⅔’s of the way through the year! I hope you all had a restful week off
and had some fun with your student’s science fair projects. Thank you very much for the Valentine’s Day
cards and gifts.

The students are ready for their final trimester ever (as the middle school runs on a quarter/semester
system). We evaluated our own work and efforts before break, and took an honest inventory of what we
need to do before the year ends to achieve our 5th grade goals and had a big assessment week.

February in Review

In language arts, we completed reading George Washington’s Socks and studying different literary
structures and elements. In social studies, we learned more about the Revolutionary War and its
conditions during GWS. In math we focused on word problems, extra information, and how to determine
what the problem is asking us to do. We visited the middle school science fair and our science fair

projects are coming along really well! I am impressed with the level of research and scientific writing. In
P.E. we ran our last mile of the second trimester and began some games and conditioning to prepare for
our fitness test. We changed our 2nd grade buddies and continued to settle into our third arts electives
rotations.

Coming in March

ELA and SS: We will continue to work

with George Washington’s Socks and
the Revolutionary war with a book
report and creative writing. We will
also continue to work on scientific
writing with our science fair google
docs. Ask your student to show you all of his/her work!

Math and Science: Math will have us looking at nothing

but word problems and deciphering how to solve multi-
step and multi-operational problems. Math facts are
also a big push! Our science fair is this month, so we
will analyze our data and create visuals to help show
our data. We will also begin studying different cycles in
science, looking for connections between them.

A close up of our monsters. :)

Teacher Requests
As repetitive as it is, please check your student’s progress on his/her science fair projects. You have been
helping so much and I really appreciate it. It only helps your student to have one-on-one help with larger
projects, and I am not able to run 24 different experiments. That, and I do not have an oven, voltmeter,
endless sacks of flour, video games or an aebleskiver pan. :) I hope you are all able to make our science
fair!

Remember, every Wednesday is early release day, and every Friday is red/spirit day :)

Donations: We would love some pre-sharpened pencils and/or eraser tops for the pencil tops
