equipment combinations for military use.

AIM

1. The aim of this agreement is to standardize, for use by NATO Armed Forces the following:

a. Brake Anti-Lock Device Connector (hereafter known as the "connector" in this

document) for anti-lock braking systems on tactical land vehicles and trailers; and

b. location of the connector.

AGREEMENT

2. Participating nations agree to adopt the device connector, which is defined in ISO
Standard 7638.

DEFINITIONS

3. The following terms and definitions are used as part of this agreement:

a. Tactical Land Vehicle. A military vehicle, whether designed primarily for military use
or adapted from a commercial vehicle, which has specialized military characteristics
to fit it for use by forces in the field in direct connection with, or in support of, combat
operations or the training of troops for such operations.

b. Interoperability. The ability of systems, units or forces to provide services to and

accept services from other systems, units or forces and to use the services so
exchanged to enable them to operate effectively together.

DETAILS OF AGREEMENT

4. The scope of the agreement is listed below:

a. STANAG 4395 is for use by the following NATO Forces:

(1) NATO Armies; and

(2) those elements of NATO Naval and Air Forces operating in a ground role, e.g.,
Marine, Naval landing parties and Air Force ground personnel.

b. This agreement applies to the following:

New procurement of tactical land vehicles and their associated trailers as well as towed
artillery.

5. To ensure interoperability amongst member countries additional requirements must be

specified and these additional requirements are listed below.

6. Pins and tubes. No service is allocated to contact numbers 6 and 7 listed in Table 1 of
ISO 7638, which under current requirements of the Standard are spare and are not fitted to the plug and
socket. Any proposed usage is to be referred to AC/301(SG/B) for approval and subsequent
amendment to this STANAG; however, it is difficult to foresee a situation where an allocation will be
authorized other than by agreement with ISO.

7. Locations of plug and socket. The location for placing plugs and sockets on prime movers and
trailers are as follows:

a. Prime Movers for Trailers (other than Semi-Trailers)

In accordance with figure 4 and Paragraph 5.1 of ISO Standard 7638, prime movers
shall be fitted with a socket connector with pin contacts as shown in figure 2. The
socket shall be situated on the rear right hand side of the vehicle (looking in the forward
direction). The socket shall be placed within 500 mm of the vehicles towing (pintle)
hook.

b. Prime Movers (normally tractors) for Semi-Trailers

A plug connector with tubes conforming to Figure 1 and Paragraph 4.1 of ISO
Standard 7638 shall be fitted to a cable located at the back of tractors’ cab. A
procedure that is widely used is the use of Anti-Lock Device Connector Cable (hereafter
known as "connector cable") which is fitted with a socket at one end and a plug at the
other end of sufficient length to connect to the tractor's plug and the semi-trailer's
socket. These connector cables will be part of each tractor's accessory equipment.

c. Trailers and Towed Artillery (other than Semi-Trailers)

A plug connector conforming to Figure 1 and Paragraph 4.1 of ISO Standard 7638 shall
be fitted at the front of the trailer. This plug is attached to a cable as specified in
Figure 4 of ISO Standard 7638 and will be of such a length that it extends 500 mm
beyond trailer's lunette.

d. Semi-Trailers
A socket conforming to Figure 2 and Paragraph 4.2 of ISO Standard shall be fitted
between the brake hose connections as described in STANAG 2604, preferably in the
same horizontal plane.

e. Park socket on trailers and prime-movers for semi-trailers

On trailers and tractors fitted with sockets a park socket connector as per Figure 3 and
Paragraph 4.3 of ISO Standard 7638 shall be fitted. This park socket shall be located
such a way that when the cable connector is fitted in the park socket the cable will not
drag on the ground or touch the trailer's A-frame or the prime mover.

8. Open space around the connector. There must be sufficient open space around the plug or
socket connector to conform with dimensions provided in Figure 5 and Paragraph 5.2 of ISO
Standard 7638.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AGREEMENT

9. This STANAG is implemented when a nation has issued the necessary orders or instructions
to the staff concerned which will put the provisions covered in the Agreement in effect.
