EATING ETIQUETTE
1. What are the three etiquette we can find pertaining to eating in the hadeeth of `Umar bin
Abu Salamah(RA)?

"Mention Allaah's Name (i.e., say Bismillah before starting eating), eat with your
right hand, and eat from what is near you.''

2. Complete the hadeeth:

When any of you wants to eat, he should mention the Name of Allaah in the beginning,
(i.e., say Bismillah). If he forgets to do it in the beginning, he should say __________

Bismillaahi fee awwalihi wal aakhirihi

3. What are the benefits of mentioning the name of Allaah upon entering the house or
eating?

Satan says, addressing his followers: `You will find nowhere to spend the night and
no dinner.'

Messenger of Allaah (saw) never found fault with food. If he had inclination to

Eat from the sides of the bowl and leave the central part of it so that your food will

Abu Juhaifah Wahb bin `Abdullah (RA) reported: Messenger of Allaah


(SAW)said, "I do not eat reclining (against a pillow).'' Pg 207.

9. What a person should do with his/her fingers after he/she finishes eating?

When one of you finishes eating, he should not wipe his fingers until he has licked
them himself or has given them to someone else to lick for him. Pg 208.

10. What a person should do when a morsel of food falls?

When a morsel of any of you falls, he should pick it up and remove any dirt on it,
and then eat it. Pg 208

11. Why did the prophet (saw) say not to leave even a morsel of food when it falls down?

He should not leave it for Satan pg 208-209

12. Is it necessary to make fresh wudoo for prayer after having meals? Give proof.

"No, because in the lifetime of Messenger of Allaah (saw), such food was rarely
available. We had no handkerchiefs, so when we ate such food we would wipe our
fingers against our palms, forearms or (the sole of our) feet, and would offer Salaah
without fresh Wudoo (for prayer). Pg 209

13. What are the merits of sharing food?

If a few persons share the same dinner-table, a small quantity of food will be
enough for many persons. Moreover, this increases mutual love and fellow-feeling.
Pg 209-210.

"Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps). Mention the
Name of Allaah (i.e., say Bismillah) when you start drinking and praise Him (i.e.,
say Alhamdu lillah) after you have finished (drinking).'' Pg 210

He should not blow in the water. Messenger of Allaah (saw) has forbidden it.
Instead, some of the water or all the water should be poured out. Pg 211
