Audience Research

My Questionnaire Analysis:

This question is a simple one which tells me

what gender people who answered my
questionnaire are. From this I can see that
my questionnaire is going to be male biased
with 17 of them being male, 11 of them
being female and 2 of them clicking the
‘prefer not to say’ option. Although it’s not
split between male and female fairly I can
still see that my intended target audience will
be influenced by the choices made due to the
females still having over a third of the
responses.

The next question I asked within my

questionnaire was to figure out and see the
ages of the responses I was receiving and
seeing how they would compare to my
intended target audience. Form the
responses, I can agree with my intended
target audience being the correct decision.
My intended target audience was 16 to 21
year olds and from the responses I can see
that 29 of the 30 were within the age bracket
of 16 to 18.

The next question I placed within my

questionnaire was asking what type of genre
they preferred, with a wide selection they
could choose from a similar outcome came
from 6 of the 8 options with ‘Folk’ and
‘Other’ not being chosen once. The genre
with the highest votes (8) was in fact Dance
and EDM which means that the most popular
genre was the one that I am going to recreate
for my music video. The second and third
being Indie (6) and joint third being Pop and
Rock/Heavy Metal (5) gives me the
information that maybe a few of the
responses I gained weren’t towards the
genre I’m going to recreate.

To gain more information on my target

audience and from the people that gave
responses to my questionnaire I asked what
type of music video they preferred, this
included performance, all narratives, both
concepts and mixture. From the responses I
received the most popular type of music
video was mixture with the example of
‘Often’ by The Weeknd. The popular type
gained 36.7% of the total votes. From this
indication I can see that within the music
video I’m going to create It would be better
for the audience if I did a mixture of
performance and narrative – this would
increase the views for the music video and
become appealing to a wider audience. Close
second was performance with 20% of the
votes which once again draws me to the idea
of doing a mixture in performance and a
narrative.
The following question that was on my
questionnaire was to see how often the
responders listened to genre dance and EDM
(Electronic dance music). From the responses
I can see that a third chose ‘not at all, they’re
not my cup of tea – I don’t like them’. This
shows that 10 out of 30 don’t listen to my
chosen genre, which means id lose a third of
my age bracket. The next option was
sometimes which gained 36.7% of the votes;
more than the last which means just over a
third listen to Dance and EDM from time to
time showing an interest. Finally, the choice
that came second with 33.3% of the votes
was the option for listening to them all the
time. Evaluating this question has shown me
that at least 70% of my intended target
audience will listen to the genre/song at one
point showing an interest and engaging
within the music video.

From this next question it bases the option of

whether the audience prefer a group
performance or a solo performance. From
the responses I can see that the majority vote
went towards a group performance. This is
good as my intended plan was to have more
than one main character involved within the
music video. This also shows that more of the
audience will enjoy my music video due to
the group performance being involved. It way
also gives them more options of having a
relatable feel towards it.
The next question that was asked in the
questionnaire was what gender the audience
prefer the main character to be. 15
responses voted for the ‘both’ option. From
this I can see that roughly half of the
responses weren’t fussed about what gender
the main character is. This is a positive as it
shows that no matter what gender the main
character is the large majority of the target
audience will still enjoy the music video.
However, from the next options I can see
that the male gender is preferred more. The
male votes having almost double the votes of
the female option shows that a lot of the
audience would prefer to just see male main
characters. In terms of my music videos this
is a positive due to my idea of having me and
my cousin as main characters, two males.
The following question asks the
questionnaire takers to choose how old
they’d prefer the main character/characters
to look. The top three options that were
chosen were firstly, ‘male young adult’ with
14 votes. Secondly, ‘female young adult’ with
8 votes and finally, ‘male middle aged adult’
with 4 votes. From the responses I can
analyse and interpret that my main
characters in the music video need to be or
look like young males, this can be from the
ages of 16 to 23 roughly. This option was
possibly the highest voted due to many
things. The young male adults may be the
ages where they’re considered the best
looking draw attention from the audience.
Furthermore, the young male adults may be

the ones that are easily related too for the

music video meaning the audience feel the
same sort of feeling the characters are
feeling.

The next question in the questionnaire was if

the responders preferred many locations
within a music video or not. From the results
it’s clear that the large majority of the
audience prefer many locations in a music
video. This is possibly due to the different
colours and atmospheres you get from
locations. As a result of this the music video
has character and keeps the audience
engaged and intrigued towards the music
video increasing views and popularity. Yes
gained 25 votes and No gained 5, this shows
how much the two responses differ and how
important and crucial it is for me to involve
many powerful locations within my music
video.

A question to help with the locations was

placed next and the top three responses
were positive. From this question I aimed to
gain information on which locations I should
aim to involve. The first and most popular
result was holiday destinations which
gathered 14 votes. From this I can claim that
my intentional idea can still be followed with
the plan of filming abroad in Turkey. The next
response was LA. LA is a large state in
America where many music videos are filmed
due to its vibrant colours, hot weather and
beaches. Thirdly, was a joint result between
London and a Studio. From this result I can
suggest that this location would be more
accessible than LA due to being in the same
country. From these responses I can go
through with my plan as I believe it would
gain more positive feedback as the audience
would be more likely to continue watching.

From looking at this question I can see that

50% of the votes said they’d like to see many
prop within the music video. This can include
items from a phone to a quad bike. 30% of
the votes came with the ‘maybe’ option and
the final 20% came from the ‘no’ option.
From this I can see that the maximum
percentage that would be happy with seeing
many props within my music video would be
80%. Within my music video from this
information, to gain attention from the
audience I should include a handful of props.
The next question that was within my
questionnaire was what the audience would
like to see in a dance and EDM music video.
From the responses I can see that bright
lights and vibrant colours was the most
popular with 17 votes, from this I can see
that when filming I need to mainly film
during the day when the sun is out to get the
best possible outcome. The second highest
vote was motor vehicles. This includes cars,
motorbikes and quad bikes. As a result of this
I should try involve a car within my music
video – this can come from renting when I’m
abroad. The final and third was a triple joint

result between a nightclub, water-parks and

the title of the music video being in the
beginning. From this I can see in the intro of
my music video I need the ‘nobody to love’
title appearing as well as having water-parks
involved and possibly having some scenes
within a nightclub. If I follow these responses
I am more likely to gain more attention and a
greater reception from the target audience
and viewers – making my video more
professional and successful.
