Understanding Solid Figures

Solid figures are 3D shapes that have length, width and height. Some solids have faces, edges and corners. Common solid figures include cubes, spheres, pyramids, prisms and cylinders. A space figure is a 3D object that has depth, width and height. Examples of space figures are boxes, balls, bicycles and trees.

  • Solid Figures: Describes various types of 3-dimensional figures such as cubes, spheres, and pyramids, with definitions and examples.

SOLID FIGURES

Solid figures are 3-dimensional figures that have length, width, and height. Some solids have
faces, edges, and corners.

Cube: A cube is a prism with squares for sides and faces.

Triangular prism: A prism with triangular faces.
Pyramid: A figure with a base that is a polygon and triangular sides.
Rectangular prism: A prism with rectangular faces.
Sphere: A figure with a curved surface in which all points on the surface are equal distance from
the center.
Cylinder: A cylinder has two equal circular bases that are parallel.
Cone: A cone has a circular base connected to a vertex.
Prism: A prism is a figure made of two parallel faces that are polygons of the same shape and
sides that are parallelograms.

A SPACE FIGURE or three-dimensional figure is a figure that has depth in addition to width
and height. Everyday objects such as a tennis ball, a box, a bicycle, and a redwood tree are all
examples of space figures. Some common simple space figures include cubes, spheres,
cylinders, prisms, cones, and pyramids. A space figure having all flat faces is called a
polyhedron. A cube and a pyramid are both polyhedrons; a sphere, cylinder, and cone are not.
