LESSON 1 Learning Competency 69

Visualizes and describes solid figures.

Solid figures are figures with length, width, and thickness. They are
also called space figures. Space figures are made up of plane figures. A box, a
ball, and a canister are examples of space figures. The following are examples
of solid figures: Cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere.

Vocabulary
Faces
Edge
Vertex (Vertices)
Net

Sand castles are fun to make.

You create solid figures when
you build sand castles.
Solid figures are objects
that take up space.

This solid figures is called a cube.

edge

face

vertex

 A cube has 6 faces.

 Two faces meet to form an edge.
 The point where 3 edges meet is a vertex.

Here are more solid figures.

Solid Figures

Cube Rectangular Triangular

Prism Prism Cylinder Cone

Square Triangular Sphere

Pyramid Pyramid

Read this,

A cube is made up of six equal squares. These equal squares are called faces
of the cube. The corners are called vertices while the sides are called edges. A
cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges.

Solid figures bounded by plane faces are called polyhendra. A cube is
polyhedron bounded by squares.

How many faces does a cube has? _________

Vertices? _________ Edges? _________

Let’s have another one.

Prisms
Prisms are polyhendra made up of two parallel bases that are polygons of
equal areas and rectangles as sides. Prisms vary according to the plane figures
that are used as bases.

These are examples of prisms.

A prism with square bases is called a square prism. It has four rectangles as
sides.
A prism with triangles as bases is a triangular prism.
It has three rectangles as sides.
A rectangular prism has rectangles as bases and has four rectangles as sides.

What do we call a prism with square bases? __________

with triangle bases? __________ with rectangles
bases? __________

Pyramids

Pyramids are space figures with only one base and triangles as sides.

A square pyramid has a square base and four equal triangles as sides. A
triangular pyramid is made up of a triangle as base and three triangles as
sides. It is also called tetrahedron. The base of a rectangular pyramid is a
rectangle and it has four triangles as sides. A pyramid is a polyhedron whose
base is a polygon and whose other faces that shares a common vertex.

Cylinder

A cylinder is made up of two circles as bases and a body that is a rectangle

when cut open.
A cylinder has two congruent circular bases.

A cone has only one circular base.

A sphere is a circle with thickness.

Now, do these.

1. Name 3 solid figures that have curved sufraces.

2. Name 1 solid figure that has 6 faces.

REMEMBER:
 Solid figures are object that take up space.
 Some solid figures have curved surfaces.

Self-Test (Lesson – 1)

I. Identify the following solid figures.

1. 2. 3.
__________ __________ __________

II. Complete the sentece by choosing the correct word in the box.

Pyramid Prism Cube

Cylinder Cone Sphere
Square pyramid Triangular pyramid

4. It is a circle with thickness __________.

5. A __________ has only one circular base.
6. A __________ has two congruent circular bases.
7. It has a square base and four equal triangles as sides __________.
8. __________ are space figures with only one base and triangles as
sides.
9. __________ are polyhedra made up of two parallel bases that are
polygons of equal areas and rectangles as sides.
10. It iss made up of 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.

LESSON 2 Learning Competency 70

Makes models of different solid figures; cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and
sphere using plane figures.

In lesson 1 you have learned the different kinds of solid figures. You
have also learned the number of faces, edges and vertices a solid figures has.
In this lesson you will learn to make models of the different solid
figures.

Read this.

A net is a plane pattern that can be folded to make a solid figure.

If you cut out a net and fold it on the doted lines, you can make a solid figure.
Nets

1)

Net for a cube

Let’s try this activity to make solid figure. Follow carefully the net for a
cube.

Step 1 Cut out three nets ( you can use cartolina or any thick clean paper.)

Step 2 Fold on the dotted lines and tape closed.

Step 3 Make a table to record the name of each figure you made. Write the
number of faces, edges, and vertices of each figure.

2)

Net for a Rectangular Prism

Step 1 Cut out three nets.

Step 2 Fold on the doted lines and tape closed

Step 3 Write the name of the figure you have just made. Then write the
number of faces, edges and vertices. (Use one table. The table you
prepared in the first model.)

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, SHOW YOUR WORK TO YOUR IS/RT TO

CHECK.
3)

Net for a Triangular Pyramid

4)

Net for a Triangular Prism

5)

Net for a Square Pyramid

6)

Net for a cylinder

Cut to circles of the same diameter for the circular bases.

Cut a rectangular piece of cartolina to make the body of the cylinder.
Tape to close.

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, SHOW YOUR WORK TO YOUR IS/RT TO

CHECK.

REMEMBER:
To make models for the different
 Solid figures, you have to prepre a pattern or a net.
 A net is a plane pattern that can be folded to make a solid figure.

Self-Test (Lesson – 2)

Answer the following

I. Which net can be folded to make a cube.

1.

A. B. C. D.
II. Name the solid figure that can be made with each net.

2. 3.

4. 5.

6.
