ME 3350 – Spring 18 HW6

Assigned: 2/22, Due: 3/08

Problem 1
Upon landing, an aircraft
decelerates using a reverse
thrust system, which consists of
the activation of a deflector
downstream of the jet engine
deflecting the air at an angle  .
Probes mounted on the
deflector are able to measure
the air velocity at the outlet of
the deflector Vout .

1- Using a control volume

analysis, derive an
expression for the
magnitude of the reverse
thrust F applied by the
engine on the aircraft
landing at velocity V . The inlet diameter of the jet engine is D .

2- Calculate F when the aircraft landing speed is V  330 km/h, the deflector angle   35 ,
the diameter of the jet engine is D  1.2 m, the velocity at the outlet of the deflector is
Vout  950 km/h, and air properties are taken at 25C. [Solution: 37,785 N]

Problem 2
A computer tower can be represented as a
rectangular box (height H , width W , depth D ).
The space within the tower is occupied by
electronic components and air (density  ), in an
equal volume. Cooling is achieved via forced
convection using a fan-motor assembly mounted
in a circular housing (diameter d ) at the back of
the tower. The specifications of the fan are to
replace the total volume of air within the tower
every second. The velocity profiles measured at
the inlet and outlet of the fan are nearly uniform
(kinetic energy flux correction factors: 1  1 at
the fan inlet;  2  1.1 at the fan outlet).

1- Derive an expression for the wattage of the fan-motor unit to be purchased if its efficiency is
 and losses due to viscous dissipation are neglected.

2- Calculate the wattage numerically when H  40 cm, W  40 cm, D  12 cm, d  5 cm,

  1.20 kg/m3,   30% ) [Solution: 0.505 W ]

3- Calculate the pressure difference across the fan [Solution: 15.8 Pa]
