Lesson Idea Name: Seasons of the Year

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): First Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see
patterns in weather and climate.
a. Identify different types of weather and the characteristics of each type.
b. Investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane,
rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a
periodic journal or on a calendar seasonally.
c. Correlate weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) to seasonal
changes.
Technology Standard Addressed: 3 - Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Power Point

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): this activity addresses Universal Design for Learning by having software
that moves at the student’s pace. For example, in the power point the student is able go backwards or move
forwards whenever they need to, and with the new feature of recording your teacher’s voice gives the
students the ability to follow along at their own speed. It’s even great for the simple fact that if a student
misses school they can review this information, almost like they were there.

Lesson idea implementation: I think with any lesson a teacher should start off with asking questions. Finding
out what your students may know about the subject before you teach them. First, I would ask the class to
share what all do they know about the seasons of the year to their classmates. Next, I will create four groups
and assign each group a season. Once they get assigned their season they will find all the information they can
about their specific season. Using more than one type of resource like; books, websites, and encyclopedias etc.

After gathering all their information, they will create a poster and, on the poster, there must be pictures and
facts we may not have known about the seasons. For instance, identify types of temperatures/weather,
observing when does seasonal changes begin, and correlating data to climate changes. This will show me their
understanding why these seasons take place. Finally, present their projects as a group to the class. Everyone’s
participation is required.
Reflective Practice: After creating this lesson, I can see how far a child’s mind can take them when a teacher
gives them the freedom to do so. Giving them independence to come up with something great. During the
lesson I have noticed the students seemed more engaged, because they were completing hands-on work,
rather than just sitting around completing worksheets. If they wanted to extend this lesson the students could
build their own narrated science presentation on sky and weather. Furthering their knowledge on; seasons,
climate, and temperature.
