Cardiovascular system - transports and exchanges

i. Oxygen

ii. Water + nutrients

iii. Hormones

iv. antibodies, platelets, leukocytes

v. heat

vi. CO2

vii. Urea and other wastes

3 Primary components of system

1. Blood - fluid medium for BULK TRANSPORT of materials

2. Heart - pump for blood, creates pressure gradient for material transport

3. Vasculature - blood vessels: closed dual circuit one way flow

*the left side of the heart is the stronger side, but it pumps the SAME AMOUNT OF BLOOD

BLOOD

made of water, solutes and formed elements

5-5.5L in volume (babies have ~250mLs)

A. Plasma

Proteins (albumins, globulins, fibrinogens, hormones)

electrocytes (ions e.g. Na, Cl, K, HCO3)

nutrients (glucose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins)

gases (N2, O2, CO2)

wastes (urea, creatinine)

B. Erythrocytes (RBCs)

5billion per mL of blood

carry O2 but cannot use it (enucleate)

carry a little bit of CO2

live around 120 days

production stimulated by erythropoietin by kidneys

C. Leukocytes (WBCs)

-Neutrophils

-Lymphocytes

-Monocyes

-Eosinophils

-Basophils

These are the immune response cells - acting outside of the blood

D. Platelets (not a real cell)

like the dandruff of megakaryocytes

they help with hemostasis

they hold serotonin

they work with collagen and fibrinogens
