CASE EXAMPLE: ASSIGNMENT 2 (GROUP PRESENTATION)

(PO11, CO2, C4, C5)

The case example with a designated topic should be conducted in a group as listed in
Table 1. Students are compulsory to present the case example with a report
submission.

List of Topics:

A. Oil and gas industry (Group 1)

Relate the activity to the environmental issue. Identify the hazardous emission/by product
from the industry. Propose solution in combating those issues.
Task
1. Identify type of industrial or major activities related to the site study.
2. Estimate population at the respective area of study.
3. Identify the problems related to environment at the site.
4. Proposed possible solution to eliminate/reduce the problems.

B. Textile industry (Group 2)

C. Food processing (Group 3)

D. Overpopulation (Group 4)
Your case study question: Choose one city that having a dense population and point out
issues related to the environment (eg; municipal solid waste, sewage system and etc)
Propose solution in combating those issues.

E. Transportation (Group 5)
Your case study question: Transportation is one of the main key infrastructure to the city
development. However, the transportation leads to environmental problems. Identify those
problems. As an environmental engineer, propose new solutions to combat the problem
and how can you implement in our society.

F. Attitude or social (Group 6)

Your case study question: The environmental aspect should be introduced from the very
beginning of education stage (eg; kindergarten, primary school). Identify any
practice/knowledge related to environment (eg; recycling, no plastic bag day) that can be
introduced to school students to enhance the understanding of the environmental care.
Identify issue related to attitude that leads to environmental problems (ex; throwing
garbage at undesignated area, negligent about utility/energy saving). As an environmental
engineer/advisor, propose any solution that can be implemented to reduce the
environmental impact.

G. Electroplating industry (Group 7)

H. Deforestation (Group 8)
Your case study question: Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order
to make the land available for other uses. However, this activity leads to environmental
problems. Identify those problems. As an environmental engineer, propose possible
solution to eliminate/reduce the problems.

I. Mining (Group 9)
Your case study question: Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological
materials from the earth from an orebody, lode, vein, seam, reef or placer deposits which
forms the mineralized package of economic interest to the miner. However, mining
operations usually create a negative environmental impact, both during the mining activity
and after the mine has closed. Identify those problems. As an environmental engineer,
propose possible solution to eliminate/reduce the problems.
