It is a beautiful summer day. The sun shines warmly on an old house near
a river. Behind the house a mother duck is sitting on ten eggs. "Tchick."
One by one all the eggs break open.
All except one. This one is the biggest egg of all.
Mother duck sits and sits on the big egg. At last it breaks open, "Tchick,
tchick!"
Out jumps the last baby duck. It looks big and strong. It is grey and ugly.
The next day mother duck takes all her little ducks to the river. She jumps
into it. All her baby ducks jump in. The big ugly duckling jumps in too.
They all swim and play together. The ugly duckling swims better than all
the other ducklings.
- Quack, quack! Come with me to the farm yard! - says mother duck to
her baby ducks and they all follow her there.
The farm yard is very noisy. The poor duckling is so unhappy there. The
hens peck him, the rooster flies at him, the ducks bite him, the farmer
kicks him.
At last one day he runs away. He comes to a river. He sees many
beautiful big birds swimming there. Their feathers are so white, their
necks so long, their wings so pretty. The little duckling looks and looks at
them. He wants to be with them. He wants to stay and watch them. He
knows they are swans. Oh, how he wants to be beautiful like them.
Now it is winter. Everything is white with snow. The river is covered
with ice. The ugly duckling is very cold and unhappy.
Spring comes once again. The sun shines warmly. Everything is fresh and
green.
One morning the ugly duckling sees the beautiful swans again. He knows
them. He wants so much to swim with them in the river. But he is afraid
of them. He wants to die. So he runs into the river. He looks into the
water. There in the water he sees a beautiful swan. It is he! He is no more
an ugly duckling. He is a beautiful white swan.
Long ago there lived an lonely old carpenter named Geppetto. He made a
puppet out of some wood, a ball, and a string. That night, a fairy visited
and cast a spell that made the puppet walk and talk. The next morning,
Geppetto discovered the animated puppet and named him Pinocchio.
Geppetto gave Pinocchio all of his money and sent him into town to buy
books for school. Instead, Pinocchio used to the money to buy a ticket for
the circus. Two clowns gave Pinocchio a hat and asked him to stay, but
he said he must go back to Geppetto.
The clowns returned Pinocchioís money, but on the way home he was
robbed by and evil cat and an equally evil fox. The fairy appeared again
and asked what happened; Pinocchio pretended he had been captured by a
monster. Suddenly his nose grew, and the fairy said, ìWhenever you lie,
your nose will get bigger. Now go find Geppetto; heís out looking for you
by the sea.î
Pinocchio was rowing a small boat in the sea when he thought he heard
Geppettoís voice coming from inside a large dark cave. He rowed inside,
only to find himself inside a whale with Geppetto. He tickled the whale
with a feather, and the whale sneezed, sending Pinocchio and Geppetto
flying out on to the beach. Relived, Pinocchio vowed never to lie again
and then he heard the fairyís voice saying, ìmake that promise and you
will become a real boy.î
5. Sleeping Beauty
A king and a queen had been trying to have a child for years. When the
child finally arrived, they called her Aurora. A great holiday was
proclaimed to celebrate Auroraís birth. Visitors came from far and wide,
including three good fairies, named Merryweather, Fauna and Flora. One
of the most distinguished guests was another king from a neighboring
kingdom, who brought his son Prince Philip. Both kings realized that
their dream of a united kingdom could now come true.
The three good fairies began bestowing their gifts upon Aurora. Aurora
received the gift of Beauty, and gift of SongÖ but before the last gift was
bestowed, a wicked fairy interrupted. This wicked fairy was upset that
she wasnít invited to the party, so she cast a spell ñ on the day of Auroraís
16th birthday, she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning
wheel and die.
The third good fairy hadnít bestowed her gift yet, and she was horrified at
the spell the wicked fairy cast. The good fairy wasnít strong enough to
undo the spell, but she was able to dilute it a bit ñ instead of death,
Aurora would fall asleep until her true love come along to undo the spell
with a kiss.
6. Cinderella
There once was a widower who remarried. His second wife was
ill-natured, and she had two daughters who were just as unpleasant as
their mother. The man had a beautiful, gentle daughter of his own, and
she was soon to become the servant of her evil step-mother and
step-sisters. They made her do all the chores around the house, and she
was named Cinderella, after the cinders she swept out of the fireplace.
The King needed to find a queen for his prince, so he threw a huge ball.
The evil step-mother and step-sisters were invited, but Cinderella was not
allowed to go. After they left, Cinderellaís fairy godmother appeared and
changed her dirty rags into a beautiful gown with glass slippers. Next the
fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a coach and some mice into
footmen. Before Cinderella left, the fairy godmother warned her to be
home before midnight, because the spell would only last till then.
Cinderella was a hit at the ball. The prince fell in love with her and asked
her name. Just then the clock struck midnight, and Cinderella ran away.
She was in such a hurry, she lost one of her glass slippers. It was the only
clue the prince had to find his true love. He went to every home in the
kingdom and had every single young girl try on the slipper to see if it fit.
The evil step-sisters couldnít fit the slipper, but Cinderella did. The prince
married her and they all lived happily ever after.
7. Rumpelstilskin
An old miller went before the King and, trying to impress him, told the
King his daughter Rose could spin straw into gold. The King ordered the
girl to be locked in a room full of straw. He said she was to spin the straw
into gold or her head would be cut off. Rose began to cry, and suddenly a
little man with a long gray beard appeared and said, ìI will help you spin
the straw into gold if you give me something in return.î The first night,
she gave him her ring. The second night, she gave him her necklace. But
then she had nothing left to give. The little man wanted her first born and
Rose had to agree, or have her head cut off by the King for not spinning
straw into gold.
The little man kept his promise, and the King made Rose his queen.
When Rose had her first child, the little man with the gray beard came to
take the baby away. He said he would not take the baby if Rose could
guess his name ñ she had three days to come up with three guesses. Rose
sent messengers out to spy on the little man and found out his name was
Rumpelstilskin. And the baby remained with the king and queen.
Hansel and Gretel were brother and sister. Their poor parents were
starving, so they went out in search of food. They took one slice of bread
along, which they used to mark a path back to their home by leaving
crumbs along the way. After a while, they came upon a little house made
of gingerbread. Hansel broke off a piece to eat.
Suddenly, the door flew open and an old woman came out and invited
them in. She fed them mountains of pancakes and fruit, and then tucked
them into bed to sleep. What Hansel and Gretel didnít realize was that the
old woman was fattening them up so she could use them in her favorite
dish ñ roasted child! Now they were prisoners, and the old woman kept
feeding them, and when she asked them to stick their fingers out of their
cell so she could judge how fat they were getting, Hansel held out a bone
instead.
Finally, the children escaped and pushed the old woman into the oven.
They filled their pockets with jewels and food and used the trail of bread
crumbs to find their way back home, where they lived happily ever after.
There once was a queen who named her only daughter Snow White
because her skin was so fair and lovely. The queen died, and Snow
Whiteís father married a new queen, who was evil, vain and wicked.
Every morning she would stand in front of the mirror and say, ìMirror,
mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?î The mirror always
answered, ìthee,î until one day it said that Snow White was the fairest one
of all.
The evil queen ordered one of her servants to take Snow White to the
forest to have her killed. The servant, feeling sorry for Snow white, let
her go and brought back a wild boarís heart to show the queen he had
done the deed. Snow White, alone and hungry in the forest, came across a
little cottage with seven tiny bedsÖetc. When the dwarves came back
form work they found Snow White and said she could stay with them if
she cleaned and cooked.
They all lived happily until one day when the mirror told the wicked
queen that Snow White was still alive and living with the dwarves. The
wicked queen disguised herself as a peddler and went to the cottage while
the dwarves were at work. She gave Snow White a red apple that was
poisoned.
When Snow White took a bite of the apple, she fell down unconscious.
The dwarves were very sad and built a glass coffin for her. One day a
prince came by and saw how beautiful Snow White was, and bent down
to give her a kiss. Snow White woke up and they were married.
There once was a family of bears: mama bear, papa bear, and baby bear.
They were just about to eat their lunch, but their porridge was too hot, so
they went for a walk in the woods. Just then a little girl named Goldilocks
came upon their house and went inside. She saw the three bowls of
porridge on the table and tasted some from each bowl. The big bowl was
too hot, the medium-sized bowl was too cold, but the smallest bowl was
just right, so she ate it all up.
The she saw three chairs and decided to sit down. The big chair was too
hard, the medium-sized chair was too soft, but the little chair was just
right. As Goldilocks was getting comfortable in the smallest chair, it
broke. So, she went in the next room and found the beds. The big bed was
too hard, the medium-sized bed was too soft, but the little bed was just
right, and Goldilocks fell last asleep.
Just then, the three bears came home to find their house in a mess. Papa
bear said, ìSomeoneís been eating my porridge.î Mama bear said the
same thing, and baby bear said, ìSomeoneís been eating my porridge, and
they ate it all up!î Then they saw the chairs and papa bear said,
ìSomeoneís been sitting in my chair.î Mama bear said the same thing, and
then baby bear said, ìSomeoneís been sitting in my chair, and they broke
it!î
Then they went into the next room and found Goldilocks asleep in baby
bearís bed. When she awoke, she was so frightened she ran out of the
bearsí house and didnít stop running till she got home.
Once upon a time, there lived a very cunning and mischievous fox. He
used to speak to other animals sweetly and gain their trust, before playing
tricks on them.
One day the fox met a stork. He befriended the stork and acted like a very
good friend. Soon, he invited the stork to have a feast with him. The stork
happily accepted the invitation.
The day of the feast came, and the stork went to the fox’s house. To her
surprise and disappointment, the fox said that he could not make a big
feast as promised, and just offered some soup. When he brought the soup
out of the kitchen, the stork saw that it was in a shallow bowl!
The poor stork could not have any soup with its long bill, but the fox
easily licked the soup from the plate. As the stork just touched the soup
with the tip of its bill, the fox asked her, “How is the soup? Don’t you
like it?”
The hungry stork replied, “Oh it is good, but my stomach is upset, and I
can’t take any more soup!”
“I’m sorry for troubling you,” said the fox.
The stork replied, “Oh dear, please don’t say sorry. I have some health
problem and cannot enjoy what you offer.”
She left the place after thanking the fox, and inviting him to her house for
dinner.
The day arrived and the fox reached the stork’s place. After exchanging
pleasantries, the stork served soup for both of them, in a narrow jar with a
long neck. She was able to have the soup very easily with her long bill,
but the fox obviously could not.
After finishing hers, the stork asked the fox if he was enjoying the soup.
The fox remembered the feast he himself had given the stork, and felt
very ashamed. He stammered, “I…I’d better leave now. I have a tummy
ache.”

grew into a beautiful big flower bud, which appeared like a Tulip!
Mesmerized by the beauty of the flower, she softly and gently kissed the

Once there lived a poor widow and her son, Aladdin. One day, Aladdin’s
uncle, Mustafa, came to visit them. He said, “Sister, why don’t you let
Aladdin come and work for me?” They agreed and Mustafa took Aladdin
along with him. They walked in the desert and came to a cave. The cave
was full of riches and treasures but Mustafa was afraid to go inside. He
wanted Aladdin to go in and get him the treasures instead. “Go inside,”
commanded Mustafa, “and find me the jewels. You will also find a lamp.
Bring it to me.”
Aladdin went inside and found more riches than he could ever imagine.
He found a beautiful ring and wore it on his finger. He also collected as
many gems as he could, but before he could come out of the cave,
Mustafa said, “Quick! Just hand me all, the jewels and the lamp!”
Aladdin refused. Angry at the refusal, his cruel uncle blocked the
entrance of the cave and left.
Aladdin sat in the dark and cried. Then he saw the old lamp and decided
to light it. While cleaning it, he rubbed the lamp and out came a genie!
“Master, I shall grant you three wishes,” he said. Aladdin said, “Take me
home!” In seconds, Aladdin was with his mother, counting the gems he
had brought from the cave. Aladdin also brought the ring along with him
and when he rubbed it, out came another genie! “Master, I shall grant you
three wishes!” said the genie. “Make us rich and happy!” said Aladdin.
And Aladdin and his mother lived happily.
One day, Aladdin saw the sultan’s daughter and fell in love with her. He
went to the palace with gems and asked for her hand in marriage. The
king agreed to this. After marriage, Aladdin showered the princess with
all the riches and gave her a huge palace to live in. When the sultan died,
Aladdin ruled the kingdom. He was just and kind hearted and everybody
was happy under his rule.
Meanwhile, Mustafa came to know how Aladdin found the magic lamp
and became rich. He wanted to take the lamp back. So, one day, when
Aladdin was away, Mustafa came to the palace dressed as a trader. He
cried out, “Get new lamps for old ones! New lamps for old!” Hearing this,
the princess took out the magic lamp and gave it to him. She did not
know that the old lamp was indeed magical. She bought a shiny new lamp
instead. Mustafa gladly took the lamp and went away. He then
commanded the genie, “Send Aladdin’s entire palace into the deserts in
Africa!” And saying this, Mustafa, along with the princess in the palace,
were sent to Africa. Aladdin, on coming back, found his wife and house
missing. He searched for the palace for three long days. Finally, he
rubbed his magic ring and asked the genie, “Please take me to my
princess!” The genie agreed. When he met his wife, Aladdin and the
princess decided to trick Mustafa.
One night, the princess said to Mustafa, “I don’t think Aladdin will ever
find me here! I might as well live as your slave for I am certain he is dead
now!” Mustafa was very happy and ordered for a feast. During the feast,
the princess got Mustafa drunk and he fell into a deep sleep.
In the meantime, the princess took the magic lamp to Aladdin. Together,
they asked the genie of the lamp to take the entire palace back to
Aladdin’s kingdom. The genie then killed Mustafa and Aladdin and the
princess lived happily ever after.
27. A Gingerbread Man
A little old man and a little old woman stayed in a cottage.
One day, the woman made a gingerbread man for dinner. She decorated
the gingerbread man with eyes made of currants and buttons made of
cherries. But when she took out gingerbread man from the oven, he
jumped out and ran away.
The old woman and her husband ran after him but gingerbread man was
too fast for them. Neither the pig, nor the cow, nor the horse who
followed, could outrun gingerbread man. Now, the gingerbread man came
to a river and didn’t know how to cross it. A sly fox came up to him and
offered to help him to cross the river. He asked him to sit on his tail but
gingerbread man began to get wet. Then the fox told him to sit on his
back and finally on his nose.
No sooner did gingerbread man sit on the fox’s nose, that the sly fox
tossed him and gobbled him up.
33. Rumpelstiltskin
Once there was a poor miller who had a very beautiful daughter. One day,
he went to the king’s court and claimed that his daughter could spin straw
into gold. The king ordered the miller’s daughter to come to the palace.
He took her to a room full of straw and said to her, “You must spin all
this straw into gold tonight, or you shall die!” The miller’s daughter was
locked in the room alone. She did not know what to do and began to cry.
Suddenly, a dwarf came out of nowhere and asked her, “Why are you
crying?” When she told him the story, he said, “Don’t worry, I will spin
the straw into gold, but what will you give me in return?” “I will give you
my necklace!” she promised. The dwarf spun all the straw into gold.
The next day, when the king saw this, he was astonished and pleased. He
became greedier. He took the girl to a bigger room and said, “Spin all this
straw into gold or you shall die!” She was locked inside again, and once
again she began to cry. The tiny man came into the room once more. He
said, “If I spin all the straw into gold, what will you give me this time?”
She gave him her gold, ring and he sat through the night and spun all the
straw into gold.
The third morning, the king was very happy to see the room full of gold.
He took her to the biggest room filled with straw and said, “If you spin all
this straw into gold, you shall become my wife!” The girl was locked up
and once again, she began to cry. This time, when the little man came to
her, she said, “I do not have anything to give you, sir! What will I do?”
He said, “Promise me that you will give me your first born child when
you become the queen!” The girl agreed to do so, because she was not
expecting to become the king’s wife. The tiny man spun all the straw into
gold in the night. The next day, the king was pleased to see the gold. He
married the girl and soon they had a baby.
The tiny man came to the queen to take her baby away but she had
forgotten about the promise. She cried and begged him to leave her baby
alone. The tiny man said, “I will not take your baby if you can guess my
name! I will give you three days!” Saying this, he disappeared. The queen
tried to remember all kinds of names. The next night, when he came, she
told him all the uncommon names she could think of, “Perhaps your
name is Shortribs, or Sheepshanks, or Laceleg,” but he always answered,
“That is not my name.” The next day the queen sent her servants all over
the country to get all the possible names of the people. That night, the
dwarf came to the queen again but she could not guess his real name.
On the third day, one of the queen’s servants went into the forest to find
the little man. Deep in the woods, the servant found him dancing and
singing happily in front of a fire. He sang, “Today I bake, tomorrow I
brew, the next I’ll have the young queen’s child. Ha, glad am I that no
one knew, that Rumpelstiltskin I am styled!” The servant went back to
the palace and told the queen the name of the dwarf.
That night, when the little man carne to the queen, she was already
prepared. The tiny man challenged, “Do you give up? Shall I take your
child away?” The queen smiled and replied, “Is your name Harry? Is it
Conrad? Perhaps it is Rumpelstiltskin!” Hearing his name, the tiny man
screamed, “How could you possibly know my name?” Saying this, he ran
away, deep into the forest never to be seen again.
38. Rapunzel
Long, long ago in a house that overlooked a beautiful garden lived a
childless couple. They prayed to God every day to bless them with a child.
One day they found that God had answered their prayer. They were at
long last going to have a baby!
Their days passed in happiness but alas! the wife fell ill. She would eat
nothing and the husband was worried that she would waste away. He
tried to tempt her with many good things but she refused everything. “But
you must eat something, my dear,” he begged her. “There is a herb called
Rapunzel in the garden next door. I will feel better if I can eat that,” she
said. The husband’s heart sank when he heard her. This garden was
owned by a wicked witch who would let no one enter. But he loved his
wife very much and so with a pounding heart, he decided to go into the
garden at a time when the witch was away. One day, finding an
appropriate time he went into the gar den. He had managed to pluck the
herb but as he was about to leave, the wicked witch came back. “You
thief! How dare you enter my garden?” she screamed. She threatened to
put a curse on him. He fell at her feet and begged, “Please don’t curse me.
If my wife doesn’t eat this herb, she will die. She is going to have a baby
and is very ill.” The witch stopped to think awhile. “I will let you go on
one condition. You will give me the baby after it’s born.” The poor man
had no other way out but to agree.
He took the herb to his wife and miraculously she soon recovered and
gave birth to a beautiful girl. But as per the agreement the witch came to
take the baby away. She took Rapunzel—for that’s what she named
her—far away and locked her in a high tower. The tower had no doors or
stairs. There was only a window on top.
The only person whom Rapunzel ever saw was the wicked witch.
Rapunzel grew up to become beautiful with pretty eyes, a beautiful voice,
and her golden hair grew very, very long. All day long, when Rapunzel
was alone, she would sing and weep.
Every day, the wicked witch came to the tower with food. She stood at
the bottom of the tower and shouted. “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let your hair
down!” Rapunzel would drop her long, braided hair through the window.
The witch used the hair as a rope to climb into the tower.
One day, a handsome prince was passing by and heard her sing. He fell in
love with her voice and unknown to all came to the tower every day to
hear her sing. One day, the prince saw the witch climbing up the tower
using Rapunzel’s hair.
The next day, the prince too called out to Rapunzel. “Let down your
hair,” he said. The prince climbed to the top of the tower. After that, the
prince came to meet Rapunzel every night.
Alas! the witch soon discovered the prince with Rapunzel. She pushed
him from the tower onto a thorny bush, making him blind. She banished
Rapunzel into the desert far away.
Many years passed. The blind prince wandered alone and finally reached
the same desert. One day, he heard familiar voice singing. Following the
sound he found her. They hugged each other in joy. Tears of happiness
rolled down Rapuzel’s cheek. As the tears fell on the prince’s eyes, he
regained his vision.
The prince took Rapunzel to his kingdom and they lived happily ever
after.
