Working Title: Lego Sea Serpent

Type of Project: Public Art

Project Statement: In August of 2017, the Herberger Young Scholars Academy moved into a
new building that some of the students and staff helped design. Having been in the school for
one semester, we’ve begun to notice the lack of art and decorations in the school. With the help
of the Executive Director of the Herberger Young Scholars Academy, Dr. Kimberly Lansdowne,
and our passion for building, we got the idea of building a giant lego sea serpent. We have had
a lot of experience building with LEGOs, so we decided to embark on a large scale project.

Project Description: For our installation art project we will be building a LEGO serpent that is
8’4” tall, 1½ feet wide, and 10 feet long on top of the quiet rooms in the HYSA building. The
LEGO sea serpent will go on top of the quiet rooms so that it can be seen from the front of the
building and from the second floor. The top of the quiet rooms are an empty surface that is seen
by all students and faculty at HYSA. The LEGO sea serpent will fill the space, allowing students
and staff to be able to see it from both the first and second levels of the building. Adding the sea
serpent will create a focal point that will draw attention to a space that is not usually seen.

Faculty Contact: Eamonn O’Brien

For our project, we will be working under the guidance of Eamonn O’Brien, the Humanities
teacher at HYSA.

Process: The first step will be mapping out the design of the sculpture and ordering all of the
materials. We will also be meeting with the architect of the building to figure out how to support
the serpent. We will use glue to ensure structural integrity of the serpent and we will attach
cables to support the sea serpent from above. We will measure the quiet rooms, cable length,
and height before building. Our next step will be to build the sea serpent. We will be using 2x4,
1x1 and 1x2 LEGO bricks of various colors. We will build smaller pieces of the sea serpent in
the DesignLab and assemble it on the roof of the quiet rooms. Other than using super glue to
support the serpent, we will also have cables supporting the structure from the ceiling.
