CATHODIC PROTECTION
Cathodic protection prevents corrosion by converting all of the anodic sites on the metal
surface to cathodic sites by supplying electrical current. "Cathodic protection is a method to
reduce corrosión by minimizin the difference in potential betwen anode and cathode. This is
achieved by applyng a current to the structure to be protected ( such as a pipeline) from some
outside source." (Guyer, 2012, p. 2) It is means of corrosion control in which the oxidation
reaction in a galvanic cell is concentrated at the anode and suppresses corrosion of the
cathode in the same cell. By a example the steel pipeline is cathodically protected by its
connection to a sacrificial magnesium anode buried in the same soil electrolyte.
Guyer (2012) states that when enough curremt is applied, the whole estructure will be at one
potential; thus, anode and cathode sities will not exist. (p. 2) Cathodic protection is commonly
used on many types of structures, such as pipelines, underground storages tanks, locks, and
ship hulls.
Impressed Current System: It use the same elements as the galvanic protection system,
onle the structure is proteced by applying a current to it from an anode. The anode and the
structure are connected by an inusulated wire, as for the galvanic system.
