plete in and of themselves. They only become perfect
and acceptable acts of devotion on the basis of what
Jesus has accomplished at the cross. As Harold Best
puts it, “While the believer offers, Christ perfects.”7
As we delve into these mysteries of Trinitarian
worship, it’s important that we allow them to remain
just that—mysteries. The tendency can be either to
sink into a pit of confusion as to how worshipping
the Trinity works or to oversimplify things and
attempt to sum up in a mere sentence how it all fits
together. The bottom line is this: Worship is a mys-
tery—a glorious, heavenly mystery. When we come to
worship the Living God, we get involved with some-
thing far too deep for our minds to comprehend. As
the writer to the Hebrews tells us, we have come to
God, the Judge of all, to Jesus the Mediator of the
New Covenant and to the sprinkled blood that
speaks a better word than any other claim we will
ever hear upon this earth (see Hebrews 12). We have
come to the city of the Living God, to thousands and
thousands of angels in joyful assembly. The more the
big picture comes into view, the more we realize just
how small a piece of the whole canvas we really see.
The worshipping life is an exciting pilgrimage into
the depths of God.
