2 Overview
Compared to the star and tree networking modes, the chain networking mode between a
BSC and multiple BTSs can save transport resources. This feature improves the
availability of the transport resources by preventing impacts caused by faults.
Multiple BTSs can be connected to the same BSC in a chain. A chain contains a
maximum of eight BTSs. Each BTS communicates with the BSC through E1 interfaces.
If one BTS in the chain fails, the Automatic Bridge Circuit over E1 is activated to bypass
the faulty BTS, which ensures the proper operation of the downstream BTSs.
If an upstream BTS fails, the Automatic Bridge Circuit is activated. The E1 link bypasses
the failed BTS and ensures the connections between the downstream BTSs and the
BSC.

3 Technical Description
The bypass switch is configured for a BTS on the EMS. The CC informs the SA of the
switch status. If the bypass switch is enabled, the SA receives a heartbeat from the CMM
at regular intervals. If no heartbeat is received within 1.6 seconds, the BTS switches to
the bypass mode. If the SA and CC of an upstream BTS is reset at the same time, the SA
is powered on before the CC. After both boards are powered on, if the SA does not
receive any heartbeat from the CC within 10 seconds to obtain the equipment ID, the
BTS switches to the bypass mode. The BTS switches to the direct mode only when the
SA receives a heartbeat and obtains the equipment ID.
If the upstream BTS reboots, the BRS configures cross slots and notifies the CMM. Upon
receiving the notification, the CMM sends a heartbeat to the SA at an interval of 400 ms.
The BRS acquires the configuration information from the EMS. If the bypass switch is
enabled on the EMS and the cross slots are configured, the BRS notifies the CMM. The
bypass switch is disabled by default.
If the IPMB is busy downloading versions to the SA and PM boards, the heartbeat sent
by the CMM to the SA may be delayed by 2 seconds or even a longer period of time. The
IPMI drive increases the priority of the IPMI command related to the heartbeat sent by
the CMM to the SA. Whenever a long IPMI package is sent, the CMM heartbeat
message is adjusted to the front of the IPMI queue and the CMM attempts to send a
heartbeat message to the SA.

6 Engineering Guide
BTSs are deployed intensively in dense urban area, to reduce multiple coverage types or
balance the traffic among BTSs. The maximum transmission power of BTS can be
reduced. For the BTS used in the indoor coverage scenario, adjusting the BTS static
power is able to avoid the indoor coverage overflow.
