BROOME BASKETBALL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Purpose of the program


1. To provide a player skills development program for invited junior age basketball players
in Broome in order to prepare these players to reach a higher level of playing ability; for
example, state level with Basketball WA teams..
2. To develop players to a skills development level that enables them to successfully apply
for basketball scholarships with schools in WA and other states.
3. To develop players who understand how to play basketball as a member of a team.
4. To develop players who understand the rules of basketball and are also taught how to be a
referee and a coach.
5. To provide a developmental pathway for players from Broome that will assist with their
possible selection by the Broome Basketball Association to attend Basketball WA
championships and camps.

Requirements of this program for players:


1. Be registered members of BBAI and Basketball WA.
2. Are generally in the relevant age group.
3. Attend all training sessions. Where training sessions cannot be attended, then coaches
and/or team managers are informed of absences.
4. Undertake the Level O Referee course.
5. Attend school on a daily basis, for example, a 100% attendance level is expected (unless a
reason for their absence is acceptable).
6. To be a student that is co-operative, diligent, and follows the rules of their school.
7. Able to demonstrate basketball playing potential to aim to compete at a State Championship
level.
8. Able to demonstrate a desire to compete and train towards a national standard.
9. Able to be socially compatible within a team sport framework.
10. Be highly receptive to coaching
11. Have a commitment to working hard to improve their mental, physical and basketball-specific
skills.
12. Not to consume, participate or encourage the consumption of cigarettes, and alcohol and
drugs, plus stimulants and other substances with a view to modifying or altering growth,
behaviour or performance.
13. Attend all training sessions with the required training uniform, a drink bottle, a basketball, a
mouth guard (preferred), and program handbook (when provided).

Age group of participants


Participants are to be either:
- Generally 15 years and under (as at 31 December 2009)

TRAINING SESSIONS
Training sessions for the Centre of Excellence during the School Term Three period is as follows:
Girls: Mondays and Wednesdays
Boys: Tuesdays and Thursdays
All training sessions are held at the Indoor Stadium of the Broome Senior High School from 5.45am to
7.15am.

COACHES
Coaches for the Centre of Excellence generally have a Level One coaching certificate or are seeking to
obtain such an accreditation while both coaches and team managers either have a police clearance and
also a working with children card or are in the process of obtaining these documents.
