CENTRAL BOYS BASKETBALL HANDBOOK
Pupose
This handbook is written to clarify the boys’ basketball program for grade 7-12.
This handbook is not meant to eliminate communication between players and
coaches, but to make certain that expectations are known be all. If you have a
concern or question, I urge you to come see me immediately. The statements and
rules herein will supersede the general Student body Handbook for all athletes in
the boys’ basketball program. Remember that athletic participation is
considered a privilege and expectations of athletes are higher than those of
non-athletes.
Philosophy
Athletics are integral and desirable part of the total educational process for those
students who choose to participate. The process of athletics is an important factor,
not just the end result of winning or losing. We will do everything possible to win.
We will coach to win, teach to be winners, and build character through the drive to
win by the rules. Strong character, responsibility, leadership, discipline, teamwork
and respect for oneself and others are valuable assets developed through athletic
participation. Athletes also develop a competitive attitude toward successful
achievement that will continue throughout life. Attitude, discipline and work ethic
are the most important intangibles in the program. Participation in the boys’
basketball program is optional and shall not be required: however, for those
who choose to participate in the program, stringent rules involving behavior,
discipline, hard work and academic achievement are involved.
Objectives
The general goal if the boys’ basketball program is to make athletics a positive
learning experience for all who are involved. It is our belief that if the objectives
listed below are attained, we will reach this goal.
Selfish acts will not be tolerated. The best players do not always win, but the best
team does. Some symptoms of selfishness are:
Attendance and punctuality are mandatory. You will be required to attend every
function and be on time. Arrange your schedule to prepare for circumstances that
might cause you to be late.
If a tardy or an absence seems unavoidable, you are expected to call Coach Dewitz.
The only problem we cannot handle is the one which we are unaware.
Discipline
Discipline – doing what is necessary or right in any and all circumstances. Self-
discipline is the source of inner power that separates the dynamic achieving person
from the unfulfilled underachieving person.
Your outer appearance and language give the first impression of your degree of
discipline. You can win with discipline. Over the course of a season your athletic
ability will not increase enough to make a significant difference. Disciplined
techniques can increase enough to make the difference. Proper technique, no
matter the opponent, no matter the score, no matter the officials, is discipline.
Discipline is not inherited trait; it must be learned. We will teach you. You must
be willing to learn
Team Discipline
Coaches will impose team discipline on a case by case basis. CISD Athletic
Handbook will always be the first order of discipline in serious cases. Each case
requiring discipline will be evaluated on its individual merit, but the general rules
listed will be followed:
1. Absenteeism – any time an athlete is going to miss practice for any reason,
the athlete will be required to phone their coach before the practice begins.
If the coach cannot be reached, a message should be left. Missing practice
during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks is considered unexcused.

10. Appearance – first impressions are very important. All boys’ basketball
players will be well groomed
Game shoes: main colors must be either Kelly green, black, grey, white. Please text
or email Coach Dewitz for confirmation.
Parent Conferences
All parent conferences should be scheduled with the coach of the appropriate team
if any conflict occurs. Parent conferences will not occur before, during, or after
a ball game. Conferences may be scheduled during coaches’ conference period.

Team strategy
Other student athletes
Athletes are selected for Varsity, Junior Varsity, or Freshman teams based on their
demonstrated abilities. The athletic program is designed to accommodate as many
students as possible and “cutting” takes place only when absolutely necessary. The
reasons for cutting an athlete are:
To insure the safety and welfare of those individuals not suited physically for
participation in that particular sport;
To determine a reasonable number of participants for a coach to work with
and bring to a level consistent with scheduled competition;
To conform to those sports where limitations of the facility dictate team’s
numbers.
In each of these instances the athlete is given other options and is never
simply “turned away.” These options include trying another sport or
becoming a team manager.
The school will provide all uniforms and most equipment necessary for the
participation in boys’ basketball. The school, excluding shoes and undergarments,
will also supply practice equipment. The school will issue game uniforms
1. Check out procedures – equipment will be issued at a date that complies with
UIL.
2. If equipment is lost payment will be made to replace it.
3. Check in procedures – equipment will be check in the 1 st Monday following
the season final game.
Injury Policy
When an athlete is injured and emergency treatment is not required, the athlete will
be referred to the trainer for evaluation and then to his family physician if
necessary. In the event of an emergency, an ambulance will be called if there is any
doubt as to the severity of the injury. The trainer will work with the physician to
establish a rehabilitation program for the athlete. The athlete will not be allowed to
nor required to participate until the physician releases him in writing.
Paperwork
Transportation Policy
Members of the Boys’ Basketball Program will always travel with the team. When
appropriate, they will eat with the team, and on overnight trip they with the team.
The only possible exceptions to the policy are: another extracurricular activity,
another school related event, a family emergency, or special circumstances
requiring the coach’s discretion. The athlete’s parent must be present for him to be
released.
The pre-game, game, and bench decorum are very important for unity, intensity, and
preparation of the team. Once the athlete enters the gym, he needs to begin to focus
on the game; and all athletes are to stay together as a team.
The Varsity will enter the locker room at the end of the 1st quarter of JV or Varsity
girls’ game to get dressed so we can shoot at halftime. The athletes will stay
together to stretch and mentally prepare for the game.
At all times during pre-game, warm-up, and the game, players are to be intense and
focused. Being focused includes concentrating on court activities and not on the
activities in the stands.
All players whether on the court or on the bench, are expected to display good
sportsmanship can class. We know that emotions run high in games, but an athlete
receiving a technical foul is never acceptable. If an athlete receives a technical,
consequences will be determined on an individual basis by the coaching staff.
Junior Varsity player’ conduct will be at its best during the Varsity game or serious
consequences will follow.
Letter policy – follow athletic handbook
Closing
Other issues may arise which are not covered in this handbook. The coaching staff
will use their discretion to the best interest of the team and player to handle those
issues. All decisions made by the coaching staff are made with the program’s best
interest in mind.
