2020-2021
CENTRAL BOYS BASKETBALL HANDBOOK

Pupose

This handbook is written to clarify the boys’ basketball program for grade 7-12.
This handbook is not meant to eliminate communication between players and
coaches, but to make certain that expectations are known be all. If you have a
concern or question, I urge you to come see me immediately. The statements and
rules herein will supersede the general Student body Handbook for all athletes in
the boys’ basketball program. Remember that athletic participation is
considered a privilege and expectations of athletes are higher than those of
non-athletes.

Philosophy

Athletics are integral and desirable part of the total educational process for those
students who choose to participate. The process of athletics is an important factor,
not just the end result of winning or losing. We will do everything possible to win.
We will coach to win, teach to be winners, and build character through the drive to
win by the rules. Strong character, responsibility, leadership, discipline, teamwork
and respect for oneself and others are valuable assets developed through athletic
participation. Athletes also develop a competitive attitude toward successful
achievement that will continue throughout life. Attitude, discipline and work ethic
are the most important intangibles in the program. Participation in the boys’
basketball program is optional and shall not be required: however, for those
who choose to participate in the program, stringent rules involving behavior,
discipline, hard work and academic achievement are involved.

Objectives

The general goal if the boys’ basketball program is to make athletics a positive
learning experience for all who are involved. It is our belief that if the objectives
listed below are attained, we will reach this goal.

1. Compete with the expectation and intent to win

2. Promote sportsmanship
3. Promote physical fitness
4. Promote a positive self-concept
5. Provide an avenue for student involvement
6. Provide an avenue for community involvement
7. Provide leadership necessary to develop strong, reputable character
8. Provide an environment where athletes will learn self-discipline
9. Provide a positive way of influencing peers
10. Teach the importance of and the procedures of goal setting
11. Development the individual: mentally, physical, socially, emotionally
12. Promote education with goal of graduation and advancing beyond high
school
13. Establish excellence in boys’ basketball

6. Be loyal to your school, administration, teachers, coaches, teammates,
families, and friends
7. Be prompt
8. Be courteous
9. Always encourage
10. Be emotional and enthusiastic

Expectations of basketball coaches

1. Be loyal to you in all areas
2. Be total honest
3. Provide leadership and training necessary to achieve our goals
4. Work you harder that you have worked before
5. Assist you in any way possible now and after you graduate
6. Treat you with respect as an athlete and as a person
7. Make all decisions predicated on what is best for the team, and then what is
best for the individual
8. Do everything within our power to improve our facilities and make Central
the best place to go to school and play basketball.
9. Help you mature and grow as a man
10. Help you reach your goals
Selfishness

Selfish acts will not be tolerated. The best players do not always win, but the best
team does. Some symptoms of selfishness are:

1. Stealing – violation of another’s belongings or space for selfish gain

2. Tardiness – explained below
3. Absenteeism – missing practice benefits no one
4. Substance abuse – tobacco, alcohol or illegal use of drugs
5. Other forms of lack of discipline as listed in “Team Discipline”

Attendance and punctuality are mandatory. You will be required to attend every
function and be on time. Arrange your schedule to prepare for circumstances that
might cause you to be late.

If a tardy or an absence seems unavoidable, you are expected to call Coach Dewitz.
The only problem we cannot handle is the one which we are unaware.

Discipline

Discipline – doing what is necessary or right in any and all circumstances. Self-
discipline is the source of inner power that separates the dynamic achieving person
from the unfulfilled underachieving person.

Your outer appearance and language give the first impression of your degree of
discipline. You can win with discipline. Over the course of a season your athletic
ability will not increase enough to make a significant difference. Disciplined
techniques can increase enough to make the difference. Proper technique, no
matter the opponent, no matter the score, no matter the officials, is discipline.
Discipline is not inherited trait; it must be learned. We will teach you. You must
be willing to learn
Team Discipline

Coaches will impose team discipline on a case by case basis. CISD Athletic
Handbook will always be the first order of discipline in serious cases. Each case
requiring discipline will be evaluated on its individual merit, but the general rules
listed will be followed:

1. Absenteeism – any time an athlete is going to miss practice for any reason,
the athlete will be required to phone their coach before the practice begins.
If the coach cannot be reached, a message should be left. Missing practice
during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks is considered unexcused.

Excused – consists of illness, injury, death of relative or close friend

Unexcused – other then above at the coach’s discretion

Consequences:
Determined by the coach

2. Tardiness – an athlete is considered tardy for workout if he is not

completely dressed out and on the floor at scheduled time.

Consequences:
Determined by the coach

3. Substance Abuse – it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase or

use alcohol. It is illegal to be in possession of or use illegal drugs. It is illegal
for a minor to buy tobacco products.

Consequences:
Determined by coach and School policy

4. Attitude/Disrespect – The athletes are expected to show respect to all

member of the faculty and the athletic staff. Disrespect of any kind to
anybody will not be tolerated.

Consequences:
Determined by coach

5. Behaviors in Class – Athletes are expected to follow all classroom rules as

well as be model students in class daily. Misconduct in the classroom could
necessitate action by the coach. The head coach will determine the direction
of action. If a player is assigned to any form of alternative class setting for
disciplinary purposes, he will face disciplinary action for the coach as well.
6. Dress Code – Athletes will be required to be in school dress code at all times,
unless it is otherwise acceptable as decided by the coach. Athletes to wear
workout clothes to be worn during athletics or practice. No jewelry is to be
worn during practice time. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary
measures.

7. Body Art/Piercing: The Basketball program realizes that sometimes

athletes will have tattoos and body piercing. However, tattoos should not be
visible when representing Central Basketball as an athlete. The same holds
true for earrings, nose rings, and the like. Examples deemed inappropriate
include: practice, games, travel, banquets, and at tournaments. Tattoos
should simply have tape or a band-aid over them, while the body jewelry can
simply be taken off.

8. Fighting during a Game – consequences to be determined by coach, athletic

director, principal, and possibly UIL.

9. Dismissed from Practice – if a player is removed from a practice session

based on attitude or poor work habits, he will be required to have meeting
with head coach the following day.

10. Appearance – first impressions are very important. All boys’ basketball
players will be well groomed

Game shoes: main colors must be either Kelly green, black, grey, white. Please text
or email Coach Dewitz for confirmation.
Parent Conferences

All parent conferences should be scheduled with the coach of the appropriate team
if any conflict occurs. Parent conferences will not occur before, during, or after
a ball game. Conferences may be scheduled during coaches’ conference period.

Parent meeting guidelines

Communication Coaches expect from the Parent

*Concerns expressed directly to the coach

*Notification of any scheduling conflicts in advance
*Notification of injury or illness in a timely manner. Coaches should be notified the
day the athlete is out prior to athletics

Appropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches

 Coaches interactions with your child

 Ways to help your child improve athletic skills
 Concern about child’s interaction with others

Topics Left to the Coaches Discretion (will not be discussed)

 Playing Time
 Play Calling
 Team strategy
 Other student athletes

Parent-Coach meeting Procedure

*Call school request a conference

* Please do not confront a coach before or AFTER a game. Meetings of this nature
usually do not promote positive resolutions.
SELECTION OF ATHLETES:

Athletes are selected for Varsity, Junior Varsity, or Freshman teams based on their
demonstrated abilities. The athletic program is designed to accommodate as many
students as possible and “cutting” takes place only when absolutely necessary. The
reasons for cutting an athlete are:

 To insure the safety and welfare of those individuals not suited physically for
participation in that particular sport;
 To determine a reasonable number of participants for a coach to work with
and bring to a level consistent with scheduled competition;
 To conform to those sports where limitations of the facility dictate team’s
numbers.

In each of these instances the athlete is given other options and is never
simply “turned away.” These options include trying another sport or
becoming a team manager.

Students who choose to participate in athletics are making a choice that

requires self- discipline and commitment. Because they choose to represent
Central our athletes are held to a higher standard than those students who do
not participate. Consequently, we place a strong emphasis on “good training
habits.” This would include making time for study and homework, following
all school and team rules and regulations, a proper diet, a positive attitude,
and a great work ethic. In other words, we expect our athletes to represent
our school and themselves in a most positive way. To accomplish that goal,
the athlete must be willing to make sacrifices.

Quitting-follow athletic handbook

Equipment and Uniforms

The school will provide all uniforms and most equipment necessary for the
participation in boys’ basketball. The school, excluding shoes and undergarments,
will also supply practice equipment. The school will issue game uniforms

1. Check out procedures – equipment will be issued at a date that complies with
UIL.
2. If equipment is lost payment will be made to replace it.
3. Check in procedures – equipment will be check in the 1 st Monday following
the season final game.
Injury Policy

When an athlete is injured and emergency treatment is not required, the athlete will
be referred to the trainer for evaluation and then to his family physician if
necessary. In the event of an emergency, an ambulance will be called if there is any
doubt as to the severity of the injury. The trainer will work with the physician to
establish a rehabilitation program for the athlete. The athlete will not be allowed to
nor required to participate until the physician releases him in writing.

Paperwork

The Insurance Waiver, Acknowledge of Rules, Concussion, emergency card and a

Physical must be completed and on file within the first two weeks of school.

Transportation Policy

Members of the Boys’ Basketball Program will always travel with the team. When
appropriate, they will eat with the team, and on overnight trip they with the team.
The only possible exceptions to the policy are: another extracurricular activity,
another school related event, a family emergency, or special circumstances
requiring the coach’s discretion. The athlete’s parent must be present for him to be
released.

Pre-Game, Game, and Bench Decorum

The pre-game, game, and bench decorum are very important for unity, intensity, and
preparation of the team. Once the athlete enters the gym, he needs to begin to focus
on the game; and all athletes are to stay together as a team.

The Varsity will enter the locker room at the end of the 1st quarter of JV or Varsity
girls’ game to get dressed so we can shoot at halftime. The athletes will stay
together to stretch and mentally prepare for the game.

At all times during pre-game, warm-up, and the game, players are to be intense and
focused. Being focused includes concentrating on court activities and not on the
activities in the stands.

All players whether on the court or on the bench, are expected to display good
sportsmanship can class. We know that emotions run high in games, but an athlete
receiving a technical foul is never acceptable. If an athlete receives a technical,
consequences will be determined on an individual basis by the coaching staff.

Junior Varsity player’ conduct will be at its best during the Varsity game or serious
consequences will follow.
Letter policy – follow athletic handbook

Extracurriculars beyond basketball

 participation in another sport is encouraged

 fundraising events/concessions/activities to support the basketball program
 Servant leadership in the community as well as at school

Closing

Other issues may arise which are not covered in this handbook. The coaching staff
will use their discretion to the best interest of the team and player to handle those
issues. All decisions made by the coaching staff are made with the program’s best
interest in mind.
