Unit Title: Positives and Negatives of the Number System Name: Derian Diaz
Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 6th Grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

CA-CCSS.Mathematics.6.NS.6-8.5
 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values.
CA-CCSS.Mathematics.6.NS.6-8.6

 Understand a rational number as a point on the number line.

CA-CCSS.Mathematics.6.NS.6-8.7
 Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will learn how to apply their understanding of positive and negative numbers to the system of rational numbers such as:

 how they are used and represented on a number line

 how they are written and interpreted in real-world context using the meaning of absolute value and ordering (temperature: Fahrenheit and Celsius,
account balance: debt)

Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will learn about the number line, what positive and negative numbers are, what absolute value means, and how to apply positive and
negative numbers in real-world situations. Students will be involved in two learning activities which are the songwriting/poem activity and the collaboration
activity. The songwriting/poem activity is an activity that give students an opportunity to write a song/poem about the lesson on positive and negative numbers
on the number line. The collaboration activity is an activity that includes four to five students in a group that analyzes a real-world problem that applies positive
and negative numbers. The subject area is Mathematics: The Number System and the Grade Level is 6th grade.
