Lesson #: 1
Standards:
Standard - CC.2.1.HS.F.2
Standard - CC.2.1.HS.F.7
Standard - CC.2.2.8.C.1
Objectives (Language):
be able to use vocab words (such as parabola or quadratic) in real world application problems
(such as launching a rocket on the football field or presenting a problem to the class on the
Smartboard)
Objectives (Content):
Know to use quadratic formula when student cannot use complete the square method.
Student knows how to write the quadratic formula.
Key Vocabulary:
Materials:
Student Textbook
PowerPoint given by the teacher
KWL Chart
Smartboard
Preparation:
I will prepare a Smartboard PowerPoint to review with the class before they do their
Practice/Application problem.
Motivation:
I will write lesson objectives on Smartboard, and review them with the class
Fatula 2
Throughout the lesson, I will use positive reinforcement, such as offering students bonus points
or Jolly Ranchers for participation
I will write the word quadratic formula and show a picture of one on the PowerPoint.
I will give the students to a new, labeled, printed out KWL chart. This will be located inside a
double-entry journal where the KWL chart is on the left side and the right side give space for
students to write down problems discussed in class.
I will ask them what they know about quadratic formulas.
They will record it in their KWL charts.
I will write objectives for today’s class: when to use quadratic formula, how to write quadratic
formula.
The students will record this under the “W” section of their KWL charts.
Presentation:
Subsequently, I will pose the question, “When do we use the quadratic formula?”
I will let the students get into think/pair/share groups to discuss this new vocab word.
I will let the students brainstorm, and I will scaffold for possible answers to this question.
I will explain that we use the quadratic formula when we cannot use the complete the square
method, a previous lesson.
I will explain that the goal of the quadratic formula is to find solutions to a quadratic equation.
I will answer any questions.
I will go over step-by-step how to write the quadratic formula on the Smartboard, asking
questions periodically to make sure everyone is up to date.
The students will record this in their double entry journals.
We will work on a quadratic formula problem together, without solving it: just setting it up.
The students will record this in their double entry journals.
I will answer any questions.
We will work on a second quadratic formula problem together, without solving it: just setting it
up. Practice makes perfect!
The students will record this in their double entry journals.
I will answer any questions.
Practice/Application:
Students will be grouped into groups of 3 or 4, and they will be assigned a problem to write on
the Smartboard for the class.
Having the students present a problem to the class will help them gain a new perspective of the
quadratic formula material.
Also, grouping the students will lower their affective filter instead of having a student work
alone on a problem in front of the class.
This practice activity will allow students to apply their oral English learning skills, practicing the
math vocab they are learning as E.L.L. students
