Culture Lesson Reflection

Because this culture lesson was planned for a virtual environment, it presented challenges. The

biggest challenge was making sure that my audience could hear and connect to my presentation. I

continually had to ask my audience if they could hear me or see my PowerPoint slides in order to make

sure there were no computer glitches. Moreover, for the synchronous material, I chose the material

based on what I thought would grab the audience’s attention in a virtual setting. Also, I made sure to

include as much discussion and participation as possible to make it feel more like a classroom setting.

Similarly, for the asynchronous material, I chose D2L discussion questions for students to answer on

their own. I chose discussion questions that students could introspectively relate to their own

classrooms. In addition, because students were going to complete a part of the lesson independently

through discussion questions on D2L, the accommodations I made were to discuss the review questions

during the Zoom lesson and to make the D2L review questions more observational and opinion oriented.

This would make the review as easy yet informative for students to complete. Furthermore, some

advantages for a virtual environment are that students are in the comfort of the own homes. This will

possibly lower their affective filters since a lot of them are in the comfort of their pajamas. However,

some disadvantages are computer glitches. Sometimes Zoom glitches out, so students may not be able

to hear you at times. Likewise, if I had taught the lesson in a live classroom, what would be completely

different is students would benefit from my hand motions and visual demonstrations much more.

Through Zoom, it is hard for students to see a teacher scaffolding through hand demonstrations. In

addition, if I were to plan this lesson again, what I would do differently is email the PowerPoint to the

class so they could follow along at their own pace. Lastly, I did cover my main objectives of describing

Britain’s culture and education system. Similarly, I think my discussion questions were relevant and

thought-provoking for my fellow education majors to apply to their own future classrooms.
