EVIDENCE AND
DESCRIPTION
During my Teaching Across Cultures Field Experience

at Salina Intermediate in Dearborn, I was able to

observe how teachers created and implemented their

lessons for students who are English language REFLECTION

learners. This is an area with a high population of

Arabic immigrants and many of whom do not speak

English. While observing I was able to see how these
teachers incorporated the students culture and
language into their teaching. The teachers took the
time to write the vocabulary words in English and
Arabic to help the students gain a better
understanding of the words they were learning. I was
able to use their model to teach a lesson to a third-
grade class. I used google translate to print some of
the key words in Arabic to better help the students
gain a deeper meaning of the lesson I was teaching.
By using this strategy in my own lesson, I showed that
I understand how important understanding the learner
is to making your lesson successful and that I
demonstrate the skills to meet standard two.
This simple practice really helped the
students gain an understanding of the
English words they were learning. The
students also seemed to be more en-
gaged in the lesson because the teacher
was taking time to include their culture
and language into the activity. I was ex-
cited to apply this practice to my own
lesson and was able to use google
translate to achieve this goal. I can use
this strategies in many ways in my class-
room like creating labels for classroom
objects and sight words in English and
the other languages my students speak.
This will help my students feel included
and achieve the highest of learning
goals.
