MAJOR METHODS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Teaching English to people who speak another language involves using different ways, each with
good and bad points. It's important for teachers to know about these methods so they can help all
students learn well. Today, we'll talk about four common ways to teach English: translating
grammar, teaching directly, focusing on listening and speaking, and using communication in
class. After discussing these methods, we will able to know that which method is better to be
used in classroom.

Four major methods are as follows:

1) GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD: Focuses on translating between native and

target languages, with an emphasis on learning grammar rules and vocabulary through
translation exercises.

ADVANTAGES:
 This method helps you get better at reading and writing.
 It's good for learning grammar rules.
 It's useful if you have to do tests where you translate stuff.

DISADVANTAGES:
 This way of learning doesn't help much with speaking and listening.
 It doesn't teach how people naturally use language or talk to each other.
 May lead to rote memorization without understanding the context.

2) DIRECT METHOD: Teaches language directly without using the native language,
emphasizing vocabulary acquisition and speaking skills through immersive experiences.

ADVANTAGES:
 This method focuses on using language in real life.
 It gets students involved and interested in learning.
 It helps you learn to speak like a native and become fluent naturally.

DISADVANTAGES:
 The absolute avoidance of the native tongue occasionally troubles the Direct method.
 Requires native speaker teachers or who have native speaker like fluency in the target
language

3) AUDIO-LINGUAL METHOD: Relies on repetition, drills, and memorization to

develop language habits, often using audio recordings to reinforce learning and focusing
on accurate pronunciation and grammar patterns.

ADVANTAGES:
 Focuses on developing accurate pronunciation and listening skills.
 Effective for drilling language patterns and structures.
 Provides repetitive practice, which can reinforce learning.

DISADVANTAGES:
 These classes are teacher-centered
 Materials in audio-lingual method are mainly teacher-oriented
 All drills and practices are in structured manner, no flexibility.

4) COMMUNICATIVE METHOD: Emphasizes real-life communication and interaction

in language learning, prioritizing meaningful language use over rote memorization and
grammar drills, with a focus on developing communicative competence.

ADVANTAGES:
 Prioritizes meaningful communication and interaction.

 Encourages creativity and flexibility in language use.

 Promotes critical thinking skills.

DISADVANTAGES:
 This method might be hard to use in regular classrooms.
 It needs teachers to change how they teach and what they use.
 Some students who need clear grammar rules might not find it helpful.

THE METHOD THAT I WOULD PREFER AS A PROSPECTIVE TEACHER

Every method has it’s positive and negative aspects, but as a prospective teacher I will adapt
or use Communicative method for teaching English as a second language. In my viewpoint
communicative approach is the best approach keeping in view the upcoming generations. Here is
the reason why I will implement this method:

I. It encourages student engagement, as this approach is student-centered so it will help my

students to actively participate in class. My interaction with students will get enhanced
creating a friendly and positive classroom environment.
II. This approach helps to develop real-life language skills. Like negotiation skills, problem-
solving skills, and hence they will learn to use English for practical purposes like
expressing opinions, asking for help, making requests etc. It prepares them for daily life
communications.
III. I will use communicative method in my class as it promotes learner’s autonomy, that
means that my students will learn and use English by their own selves, explore the
language and use the language.
IV. While using this approach in my class, my students would come to know about cultural
diversity and understands that there is abundance of cultures around them and everyone
has its own pace for acquiring English.
V. By focusing on communication, this method makes language learning enjoyable and
relevant to students' lives, leading to deeper understanding and retention of language

skills.
VI. One of the major plus points is that it helps to enhance creativity, while expressing their
ideas children think creatively taking the broader view of everything.

As I have said before nothing is perfect, everything has its pros and cons same is the case with
communicative approach such as, it’s very time-consuming, it has limited focus on grammar but
still I will use communicative approach in my class so that my students would learn more,
participate more, boost their self-confidence and prosper in every field of life.
