1. The equation of state for a certain gas is given by 𝑃 ! − 𝑏 = 𝑅𝑇. Obtain an
expression for the maximum work done by the gas in a reversible isothermal
expansion from 𝑉! to 𝑉! .

2. At 373.15 K and 1 atm, the molar volume of liquid water and steam are
1.88×10!! 𝑚! and 3.06×10!! 𝑚! , respectively. Given that the heat of
vaporization of water is 40.79 𝑘𝐽 𝑚𝑜𝑙 !! , calculate the values of ∆𝐻 and ∆𝑈 for
1 mole in the following process:
𝐻! 𝑂 𝑙, 373.15 𝐾, 1 𝑎𝑡𝑚 → 𝐻! 𝑂 𝑔, 373.15 𝐾, 1 𝑎𝑡𝑚

3. The constant-pressure molar heat capacity of nitrogen, N2 is given by the
expression:
𝐶𝑝 = 27.0 + 5.90×10!! 𝑇 − 0.34×10!! 𝑇 ! 𝐽 𝐾 !! 𝑚𝑜𝑙 !!
Calculate the value of ΔH for heating 1.00 mol of N2 from 25 °C to 125 °C.
Note that:
Since 𝐶𝑝 is temperature dependent, it has to be integrated over T to yield ΔH.

4. The combined statement of the first and second laws for the change in
enthalpy of a unary single-phase system may be written:
𝑑𝐻! = 𝑇𝑑𝑆 ! + 𝑉 ! 𝑑𝑃 + 𝜇𝑑𝑛
Use this result to write an expression for the change in enthalpy of a two phase
(𝛼 + 𝛽) system. If the entropy, pressure and total number of moles are
constrained to be constant, paraphrase the strategy used to deduce the
conditions for equilibrium in an isolated system to derive them for a system
constrained to constant 𝑆 ! , 𝑃 and 𝑛. What happens to the condition for
mechanical equilibrium?
