Technical Writing Skills Development

Luis Franco thanks Professor Intawiwat for a productive semester in which he gained valuable technical writing skills. He learned to use platforms like Google Docs and Microsoft Office to structure documents. Taking on the role of writing for a fictional company helped him develop communication and technical writing abilities. Creating an electronic portfolio allowed Franco to track his writing growth over the semester. While he previously knew of different technical writing formats, the course exposed him to a vast variety of structures for specific purposes. Working in a group enhanced his communication and helped produce higher quality work through critical thinking and revision. Franco looks forward to applying what he learned professionally.

Dear Professor Intawiwat,

Throughout the semester, I was able to gain and grasp knowledge that

has proven effective in my academic and professional careers. The use of

platforms such as google docs, and microsoft office, provided me with the

fundamental structures of which this course is planned around, which is

technical writing and its structures. Taking on the role of a fictional entity in

which a group of students takes over and creates documents for the company

allowed for an effective manner of learning and working to gain valuable

technical writing skills all while gaining communication skills as well. During

the semester the ultimate goal was to create a portfolio in which, I could

display my growth as a technical writer, this further helps me as a writer

because I have a layout of all of my assignments and pieces which show the

evolution of my writing abilities.

Throughout the semester we learned of different manners of technical writing, as

seen under my individual assignments tab in my electronic portfolio, before the semester,

I knew there were different structures and formats for specific pieces that a corporation

would use. I however did not realize how vast the structures vary and how individual

pieces should be used for specific purposes. The Memorandum in which I inform InGen

and Jurassic World employees of manners of dealing with incidents such as breach of our
database or escape of one of our animals, was one of many forms of writing found within

my e-portfolio. The knowledge gained from this course has given me the skills needed in

order to move into a professional setting and understand the decisions made by

corporations or businesses in their writing manners. Critical thinking and composing

processes were vital in understanding how the compose these pieces of writing within my

e-portfolio. One must analyze and understand what it is they want to communicate in their

writing and as a fictional company it was vital to use critical thinking in order to evaluate

the situations this corporation would have to endure and how to successfully

communicate them so that employees, staff, and guests can easily understand the

information handed to them. Composing the information and finalizing the writings, took

time and dedication, within a corporation one should maintain a professional and

educated rhetoric, drafting and revising pieces before publication is vital to maintain the

professional image a corporation such as InGen would need in order to succeed.

Working within a group effectively has allowed me to gain better communication

skills which, have further helped me outside of the classroom. Without effective

communication, and organization, working within a group could have a negative impact

on the quality of work the group has. Giving specific tasks and information to research

helped our group focus on the assignments which were given to us, and as academia

students, we have gained team building skills which we can take into professional

settings and use in professional projects. Critical thinking within a group brings a clash of

ideas and discoveries which by oneself could not be possible, evaluating each others

ideas and revising our work further helped us gain writing skills and made us better

writers.
Unfortunately with so much individual and group work, my textbook assignments

were not fully completed to the best of my abilities. As I worked on bigger projects I used

the textbook to aid be in the structure of specific types of technical writings.

The semester of spring 2018, has proven effective in advancing my knowledge and skill

sets of technical writing, I look forward to putting my knowledge and skills to the test in a

professional environment. Thank you for a informative and fun semester of writing.
