Reflection as a Writer

Since this course started, I knew that it would make good use of it and it would help me
in future projects. Now that the class has come to an end, I see that it was true. The technical
writing class is focused on building skills in students to build technical documents. Before
starting the course, I made documents for different classes and even, for my own research, but of
course, none of them had the proper formats to call them technical documents. Thanks to this
course, I have learned what a technical document is, the different types of technical documents,
and, especially, how to create them. This is a very important course because it prepares you for
the real stage and teaches you to present yourself to the world as a professional person.
Thanks to the Technical Writing course, we students had the opportunity to learn about
some technical documents, such as Minutes, Trip Reports, Technical Instructions, Technical Oral
Presentations, Resumes, Cover Letters, and Progress Reports. Something that we should never
forget is the ABC Format. This method is essential that every good technical document must
have. My favorite part of this course was when we were taught to create the resume and cover
letters. The teacher did it in a very creative way. Professor LeCompte divided the students into
pairs and asked them to find a real job advertisement. Then, the students had to compete by
creating their resumes and cover letters to see which of the students won the job. Another very
creative activity on the part of the teacher was the upcycle project, where we had to give a new
function to an object that did not work and, at the same time, we learned because we had to do
technical instructions of the procedure and an oral presentation. Professor LeCompte teaches in a
very creative way, which is great as she keeps students encouraged and engaged in her class.
Although the professor teaches in a creative way, it does not take away from the fact that it is a
time-consuming class.
In conclusion, the Technical Writing course is necessary to become the professional you
aspire to be in the future. The way you present your documents greatly influences what readers
think of you. Whether it is to get a job, to send a simple email, to make a report, or create a draft,
you must always maintain formality and do your best to be a professional. I encourage all
students to take a technical writing course. Although it is focused on teaching you to write
technical documents, it makes you a higher level student and a person capable of excelling
academically, professionally, and personally.
