Educational Standards:
Reading Content Standard 2.0- Students use reading process skills and
strategies to build comprehension.
1. 2.PK.1- Use pictures to aid comprehension
2. 2.PK.2- Ask questions or make comments pertinent to the story being read.
Objective:
● The students will be able to identify different skin colors in a group
discussion with 80% accuracy.
● Students will be able to illustrate different cultures by creating individual
drawings of people around the world, or self-portraits with 85% accuracy.

Materials:
1. The book The Colors of Us by Karen Katz
2. Writing Utensils such as: Crayons and Markers
3. Safety Scissors
4. Yarn, ribbon, and googly eyes for features
5. Glue
6. White paper for background and colored paper for different people.

Procedure:
Introduce: Present the book The Colors of Us by Karen Katz. Then ask the class,
“What color am I _____?”. Have them fill in the blank from a word bank provided.
Read: Teacher reads the book aloud to class during gathering time.
Discuss: Students will be given five questions to discuss in small groups. After a
few minutes to collect their ideas, we will collectively discuss our ideas as a class.
Q1- What color are your friends?
Q2- Are there different types of shades of people?
Q3- Why are there different kinds of people?
Q4- Is it okay to make fun of your friends because they are a different
color?
Q5- Do you think being a different color makes you a different person?
Activities:
1. Students will actively work individually to create people around the world or
a self-portrait. They may use crayons, markers, safety scissors, yarn, ribbon,
googly eyes, glue, and paper. (Hands-On)
2. Students will discuss characters from the story and identify their skin colors
as a class.

Evaluation:
Teacher will ask each child individually skin colors of the characters in the story to
check for accuracy and understanding.
