Strengths of the lesson:

1. The teacher did a review of the past lesson on consonant clusters and their sounds to
prepare the students for the next lesson with focus on –ow- and –ou-.
2. She modeled the sound production of these vowel clusters so students could follow
her.
3. The teacher’s voice is well modulated that it can be heard at the back of the
classroom.
4. The tasks varied according to the students’ groupings.
5. The teacher was moving around to monitor students doing the different tasks.
6. The last activity of the teacher on “I can see….” jibes with the objective of the lesson.

Areas for development:

1. When the review of the past lesson on consonant clusters is being done, it is extremely
important that the teacher do it well by demonstrating to the students how the sound of
each consonant cluster is produced. To do so, let the students see how your vocal tract
is formed. The audio-lingual approach in English Language Teaching tells us that the
teacher has to model it very well by giving enough time, by letting students repeat
after the teacher, and not by rushing the sound production of those many consonant
clusters. Take/model one consonant cluster at a time and as call (5-6) students in
random to repeat after. After that, let the whole class say the sound of the consonant
cluster. No rushing, please.
2. The instructions on the activity sheets needs recasting. The word highlight can be
changed to color. Now, the sets of instructions were not followed after all because the
students did not use their crayons. What they used were their pens/pencils. The second
instructions could have been improved further.
3. Be consistent in the last activity. Write “ I can see a/an (followed by the word with
either –ow- or –ou- based on the picture which you will put last.
4. You should have a way of recording the scores of the students because you will need
them in computing the average score of the whole class. The average score will tell
you the confidence level you need in relation to the students’ mastery learning of your
lesson. The average score or mean percentage speaks about how far you have achieved
your objective--- the main essence of your teaching the lesson.
5. Most importantly, what you must do in CLOSING must not the ASSESSMENT. In
closing, recap the lesson or make a generalization of the rules. The last activity which
is the evaluation activity must be in the ASSESSMENT part of your lesson plan.
6. Call the students by their names. Don’t point your finger to them to recite. Do
something about this next time I observe you.

A = Exceptional, B = Very Good, C = Satisfactory, D = Marginal and F = Unsatisfactory
