SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
Chapter 1 Introduction
This chapter introduces the following topics about the Universal Media Gateway 8900
(MG8900):
z Orientation: briefs you on network applications.
z Features: introduces main features.
By reading this chapter, you can get an overview of applications and features of the
UMG8900.
1.1 Orientation
The UMG8900 is a MGW developed by Huawei Technologies, Co., Ltd (hereafter
referred as Huawei) according to 3GPP R4 specifications. It is engaged in bearing
voice, multimedia and narrowband data (within 64 kbit/s) and in converting between
different service stream formats.
As the MGW, the UMG8900 interacts with a (G)MSC Server through H.248 protocol.
The (G)MSC Sever can be Huawei MSOFTX3000 or an MGC of other vendors.
In mobile networks, the UMG8900 provides:
z Transport and forwarding of voice and circuit-switched (CS) data;
z Conversion of CS service stream formats of mobile access networks to public CS
networks (such as PSTN and ISDN), to other mobile networks (such as GSM and
CDMA) or to packet networks;
z Packet switching, which is essential for evolvement from mobile networks to all-IP
networks (by means of upgrade).
The UMG8900 is designed to serve as:
z MGW in the UMTS R4 core network
z UMTS R99 VMSC/TMSC/GMSC together with the MSOFTX3000
z GSM VMSC/GMSC together with the MSOFTX3000
z IM-MGW in the UMTS R5 core network
The NGN trend is the integration of mobile and fixed networks, and the integration of
core networks is the first step. The UMG8900, through being upgraded, is able to act as
the MGW for the integrated mobile and fixed network to provide a uniform access and
transport platform.
1.2 Features
The UMG8900 has the following features.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 1
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
The UMG8900, developed in the soft switch architecture, is not only compatible with
TDM switching networks but also able to push TDM networks to evolve towards IP
packet switching networks.
The UMG8900 interacts with the soft switch device MSOFTX3000 through H.248
protocol. They together serve as VMSC/TMSC/GMSC of UMTS R99 core networks or
VMSC/TMSC/GMSC of GSM core networks.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 2
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
In IP networks, the factors lowering voice quality include delay, jitter, packets loss and
echo.
The UMG8900 decreases delay and jitter through dynamic jitter buffer technique,
reduces packet loss rate through packet loss compensation technique, and cancels
echo through echo cancellers. Furthermore, the UMG8900 improves voice quality
through silence detection and comfort noise generation techniques.
The UMG8900 prioritizes IP packets service streams and transports the service
streams in higher priorities first, thus improving transport reliability.
The voice quality specifications of the UMG8900 are all better than industrial standards.
For specific specifications, see Chapter 5 Technical Parameter.

HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 13
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
Voice services include broadband and narrowband voice services. Broadband voice is
represented in adaptive multi-rate (AMR) format supporting multiple codec rates.
Narrowband voice, the traditional TDM voice, is a type of CS service. Voice services
can also be classified to ordinary telephone and emergent telephone services.
The CS domain bearer services provided by the UMG8900 include:
z G.711 voice services and AMR voice services in the rates of 12.2 kbit/s, 10.2 kbit/s,
7.95 kbit/s, 7.4 kbit/s, 6.7 kbit/s, 5.9 kbit/s, 5.15 kbit/s and 4.75 kbit/s
z Data transparent transmission in the rates of 64 kbit/s, 32 kbit/s and 28.8 k bit/s
z Non-transparent data services in the rates of 57.6 kbit/s, 28.8 kbit/s and14.4 kbit/s
z G.711 services over IP
As the CS domain device of a core network, the UMG8900 can provide real-time
multimedia services of the CS domain.
The UMG8900 supports codecs adaptation of multimedia services in accordance with
3G-324M, and provides mobile video services together with other devices.
The UMG8900 supports 3G-324M services over IP/ATM/TDM.
The UMG8900 can only provide announcement resources and service bearer channels
by itself. However, by working with intelligent devices and the MSOFTX3000, it can
provide intelligent services over the CS domain.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 14
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
The UMG8900 supports the modifying and handover of bearer resources to satisfy the
demands for service streams conversion and different networks interconnection.
The UMG8900 provides highly mobility by supporting IP/ATM/TDM bearer resources,
voice codecs conversion, and the modifying and handover of internal bearer channels.
The device supports the following handover:
z Inter-exchange, intra-exchange and subsequent handover for UMTS networks
z Inter-exchange, intra-exchange and subsequent handover for GSM networks
z Inter-exchange and subsequent handover from UMTS to GSM networks
z Inter-exchange and subsequent handover from GSM to UMTS networks
3.2.6 TrFO/TFO
The UMG8900 supports TransCode free operation (TrFO) and TFO of a UMTS network
to improve voice quality.
TrFO: TransCode free operation. It improves voice quality because no TransCoder (TC)
exists in any physical path, and codecs conversion and other TC related operations are
all unnecessary. This function is defined in 3GPP R4 specifications.
TFO: TransCode free operation. It is configured for the TCs both supporting TFO. If the
codec types of two TCs are matched, this function enables in-band negotiation about
codec selection instead of codecs conversion, thus improving voice quality. This
function is defined in 3GPP GSM, R99 and R4 specifications.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 15
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
For the SS7 signaling from PSTN, the UMG8900 accesses it through SS7, MTP3 and
MTP2, and forwards it to the MSOFX3000 through SS7, M3UA and SCTP.
In the present mobile networks, GSM network equipments are mainly responsible for
voice services provision. To realize network smooth upgrade without affecting the
current network development, the UMG8900, networking with the MSOFTX3000,
provides (G)MSC functions of GSM networks, as shown in Figure 3-1.

In this networking mode, the UMG8900 and the MSOFTX300 function as the (G)MSC
in the GSM network. Therefore, only the combination of the two devices can provide all
interfaces for GSM service. The two devices are connected by internal interfaces or
standard Mc interfaces.
In a GSM network, TDM connections exist between MSC devices in a core network,
between the MSC of core network and the BSC of access network, and between
access network and PSTN.
When the UMG8900 and MSOFTX3000 together function as the device of the GSM
gateway exchange, the UMG8900 accesses voice streams from external networks
(PSTN, for example) through TDM interfaces. For signaling, it can be sent to the
MSOFX3000 directly through the connections to the MSOFX3000, or be forwarded to
the MSOFTX3000 through the signaling gateway function built in the UMG8900 or
through the TDM semi-permanent connections of the UMG8900. The signaling
includes BSSAP call control signaling of the access network and the signaling between
MSC devices of the core network.
For the voice streams of the access network, the UMG8900 transfers them to the core
network in TDM mode. For the voice streams of the core network, they can be
transferred between devices in the core network through the existing TDM network or
Voice over IP (VoIP) functions of the UMG8900.
The UMG8900 provides complete signaling gateway functions, by which, the
UMG8900 can forward the signaling of the access network and SS7 signaling of PSTN
based on M2UA and M3UA.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 17
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
After GSM mobile networks evolves to UMTS R99 networks, in access works
connection modes and service types change a lot, but in core networks the
combination of the UMG8900 and the MSOFT3000 is still used in the CS domain
serving as (G)MSC, as shown in Figure 3-2.

In UMTS R99 networks, the access and core networks are connected by ATM
connections through lu interfaces. The user plane (UP) transmits voice and
narrowband data based on lu UP, the control plane (CP) transmits call control
messages based on lu CP. However, TDM connections still exist between MSC devices
in the core network, and between the core network and PSTN.
The UMG8900 and MSOFTX3000 function as one (G)MSC in the core network. The
UMG8900 can communicate with the MSOFTX3000 either through internal interfaces
or through standard H.248 messages.
In this networking mode, the UMG8900 accesses service flows through Iu interfaces.
The control signaling from an access network can reach the MSOFTX3000 directly or
be forwarded to the MSOFX3000 through the signaling gateway function built in the
UMG8900.
For the signaling of the access network, the UMG8900 adapts it based on MTP3B and
M3UA. For the signaling between MSC devices or between the core network and
PSTN, the UMG98900 adapts it based on M2UA and M3UA.
As the UMG8900 is designed in BICC structure and supports TDM/IP/ATM bearer
modes, it can help the UMTS R99 network evolve into a UMTS R4/R5/R6 network
smoothly.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 18
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
A UMTS R4 network is designed in the BICC structure so that new services can be
easily applied. The core network adopts packet bearer mode, which occupies less
bandwidth. Figure 3-3 shows a UMTS R4 network.

Compared with the UMTS R99 network, the UMTS R4 network has the same access
network, but different core network. The core network of the UMTS R4 employs packet
connections to connect MWG and (G)MSC Server, MGW and MGW through standard
Mc and Nb interfaces.
As the MGW in the UMTS R4 core network, the UMG8900 is responsible for service
bearer and bearer control of the CS domain.
The UMG8900 can also be applied to GMSC where it acts as a 3G gateway exchange
equipment to connect PSTN. Between the UMG8900 and the PSTN are connected in
TDM mode. The signaling proceeding between them is implemented either by the
signaling gateway embedded in the UMG8900 or an independent signaling gateway.
Interfaces in the UMTS R4 network are described in Table 3-1.

UMG8900 and MGCF supports the fixed network protocol H.248. Real-time
transmission of voice between UMG8900 and GGSN is implemented via RTP/RTCP.
Connection between UMG8900 and PSTN is borne by TDM and PSTN signaling is
usually processed by signaling gateway.
2) Support interworking with PLMN
PLMN networks need to interwork with UMG8900 include 2G, 3G R99 and 3G R4
networks, when MGCF and UMG8900 should be used to perform transformation.
Combination networking of UMG8900 of 3G R4 CS domain and 2G or 3G R99 is
described above, which is not covered here in more detail.

The OMA system is designed based on the client/server structure. The UMG8900 host
acts as the server and the LMT as the client. The LMT is responsible for management
and maintenance on the UMG8900, local or remote.
The UMG8900 provides interfaces to Huawei iManager2000 integrated network
management system (hereafter referred to iManager2000), which can implement
central management on all devices in the network. The iManager2000 consists of one
iManager2000 server and multiple iManager2000 work stations.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 22
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
With graphic user interfaces (GUI), the LMT offers the following functions:
z Device configuration and management
z Service maintenance
z Performance statistics
z Service tracing
z Security management
z Troubleshooting.
The LMT and the BAM of the OMU are connected in a standard client/server structure.
The BAM supports device management and provides interfaces for management.
Because the BAM applies the industry-popular real-time and distribution operation
system, service processing capability is greatly improved. The BAM connects and
manages other functional units through the FAM.
The LMT provides friendly GUI and abundant online help information. At the LMT, you
can check command meaning and parameter description when using commands. In
addition, you can view alarm information, including alarm meaning, handling
suggestions and so on.
The LMT can manage multiple UMG8900 devices simultaneously. It provides external
alarm boxes to report alarms with voice and optical signals. It can also send short
messages to notify alarm information to maintenance technicians
To insure reliable connection between the LMT and the UMG8900, dual planes design
is used, as shown in Figure 4-2.

The master and slave OMUs of the UMG8900 are both connected to the LAN Switch
through standard cables. The LMT system communicates with the UMG8900 host also
through the LAN Switch. During communication, only the master OMU functions. When
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 23
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
the master board fails, the slave OMU becomes active and connects to the LMT. The
master and slave OMUs provide only one IP address, namely, operation and
maintenance center (OMC) interface for the outside.
Note:
The back NET accommodates the OMC interface so as to meet the requirement for back cabling.
The system provides not only GUI but also MML commands for device operation and
maintenance. The MML commands can be used for data configuration, routine
operation and device maintenance.
MML is an interface for interaction between machine and man, which is defined in ITU
Z.301-Z.341 series. Using MML commands, you can monitor and manage the
UMG8900 in detail.
MML has the following features:
z Encapsulation: A function instead of a simple operation is encapsulated to an
MML command. For example, adding an IP address needs several steps, but can
be completed by an MML command which groups those steps. This feature
inevitably improves efficiency.
z Consistency check: When an MML command is run, data consistency between
tables is checked to prevent rubbish data.
z Base API: MML commands function as the lower layer application program
interface (API) with all other applications running based on it. The GUI terminal
translates interface operations into commands and then transmits them to the
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 24
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
MML system. The MML system runs the command and returns results in text,
which are transformed to another format suitable for display in GUI. In this way,
the system stability is ensured as the system running will not be affected by
program problem.
z Interactive: The input and output of MML system are based on pure character
string. This feature enables the host to interwork with Telnet alike, and the client
terminal to run on multiple platforms (such as the dumb terminal without
processing capability). Therefore, MML meets the requirement of central network
management and the tendency of telecommunication products.
With the MML system, you can select and re-run a history command and invoke a
command by inputting key words.
The MML system provides parameter range when you input a command, and
draw-down combo boxes or check lists for your selection convenience.
4.3 Function
4.3.1 Introduction to OAM Function
The UMG8900 provides GUI for fulfilling OMA functions. OMA functions include device
management, data management, alarm management, tracing management,
performance management, and environment and power supply monitoring.
In the graphical interface, you can view device configurations, board cascading
situation, board status and power distribution status. Through right-mouse menu
operations, you can query, display, switch, reset, isolate, block and activate boards and
interfaces.
Though graphical interface and MML commands, you can manage hardware, system
resources, signaling links, clock system and physical ports of the UMG8900.
The function is to manage all data of the UMG8900 such as configuration data and
operating data.
The configuring data include service configuration and local exchange configuration
data. You can save, dump, and restore these data.
During the system running, the following data are generated such as alarms, logs,
performance statistics and tracing results. The system dumps and backs up them in
real time for fault location and network upgrade use.
HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL 25
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION OF UMG8900
The function is to receive and deal with alarms. According to the alarm type and level,
the alarm terminal (for example, an alarm box or the alarm management system)
delivers the corresponding voice and optical signals, and sends the translated alarm
information to the network management through. In addition, the function also enables
to save alarm information, display history alarm records and set alarm processing way.
The function is to provide service tracing, signaling tracing, interface tracing and
message explanation. It also performs real time tracing on service resources and
interface protocols in terms of process, status migration, resource occupation and
control information flow. The above information can be stored for fault locating and
fixing purpose.
The function is to make statistics on calls to provide reference for device status analysis
and telecommunications network plan, design, and maintenance.
The system provides abundant performance measurements. You can define lots of
measure tasks by setting different measure objects, measure sets, measure units and
measure items and measure time.
z The function is to monitor and control the environment, power supply and other
intelligent devices in the central or remote equipment room even when no one is
on duty.
