Prepositions of position

Prepositions of position say where an object is in relation to another object.

1. "Inside" is used to say that something is contained in another object.

The pens are inside the box.

2. "Outside" is used to say that something is not contained in another object.

Jenny saw Frank outside the office.

3. "Above" and "over" are used to say that something is higher than a person or object.

There is a sign above the entrance to the museum.

There is a sign over the entrance to the museum.

4. "Below" is used to say that something is lower than another object.

5. "On top of" is used to say that something is placed on the surface of another object.

Christy left her sandwich on top of the refrigerator.

6. "Under" and "underneath" are used to say that something is in the space directly below a
surface or object.

I found a coin under my desk.

7. "Next to" and "beside" are used to say that something is at the side of another object.

The restaurant is next to the library.

The restaurant is beside the library.

8. "Between" is used to say that something is in the space separating two other objects.

Chloe parked her car between two trucks.

9. "In the middle of" is used to say that something is in the center of something else.

There is a huge tree in the middle of the garden.

10. "In front of" is used to say that something is before or ahead of something else.

The ticket booth is in front of the cinema.

11. "At the back of" and "behind" are used to say that something is in the rear or after
something else.

The parking lot is at the back of the building.
