The Minister of the Environment, in coordination with all government sectors, approved water quality environmental standards. This was approved after a rigorous technical and scientific process. The standards establish that water should not contain microorganisms, viruses, or bacteria that could endanger human health or the environment. The water intended for human consumption must comply with national legal provisions, and international standards if national provisions do not exist.
