CHARACTER THAT I LIKE MOST.

Based on the short story “Mariah” written by Che Husna Azhari , the character
that I like most is Pak Imam. Pak Imam is the main character in this story.

First of all. Pak Imam was an honest man. It is suit with him as a title Imam ih his
village. We can see that Pak Imam was honest to her wife. Pak Imam told to her wife to
married again with Mariah. These scene happened after Imam’s prayers and long
supplication. In page 13, Pak Imam begged Cik Yam’s forgiveness, kissed the hem of
Cik Yam’s sarong and asked for her permission to take Mariah as his second wife.

Secondly, he was a religious man. As an Imam, quarrelsome couples who called

at the Imam’s place for arbitration would be sobered. They would listen attentively to the
imam’s sermon and exhortations to peace. Pak Imam also always conducting kulliyahs,
performing prayers and sometimes even prayer courtesy calls on Sheikh’s behalf during
his youth.

Next, Pak Imam is an obedient man. When he was a young man, he went to
Pattani in Southern Thailand to learn under tutelage of a well-known Sheikh. Although
he protested and feigned indelicate health, he need to go there. Allah is great and the
Imam’s misery was soon alleviated. We can see this scene on page 9.

Pak Imam also is a loving person. He loves his wife, Cik Yam very much. He
does not get angry even Cik Yam threw tudung saji near to his feet. Moreover, Pak
Imam do not divorce Cik Yam just because he want to marry with Mariah. Pak Imam still
loving Cik Yam even she could not pregnant and that’s not the reason Pak Imam wants
to marry Mariah.

Last but not least, Pak Imam is a secretive man. He loves Sheikh’s daughter but
does no want to tell Sheikh about his desire. At last, Sheikh’s daughter was married with
other man.
CONFLICT.

MAN VS MAN

-Pak Imam and Cik Yam

That morning, Pak Imam coming back late. Cik Yam feel strange because
usually Pak Imam will return back home after Subuh prayer for breakfast and eating.Cik
Yam’s nasi belauk. Suddenly Che Nab come and tell Cik Yam that Pak Imam is having
his breakfast at Mariah stall. Cik Yam was upset because of Pak Imam attitudes having
breakfast there. Cik Yam’s nasi belauk started to cool. The villagers consider Cik Yam’s
nasi belauk is not tasty. Cik Yam was so jealous and throw the tudung saji toward Pak
Imam

The illagers thought that Mariah had stolen Pak Imam from Cik Yam. They also
accuse Mariah had teased Pak Imam. But it will all just a desire of Pak Imam to marry
Mariah. The villagers also consider that Mariah had putting something in her cooking.
Therefore, all mans come to his stall.

Pak Imam feels guilty to his wife,Cik Yam for not eating her nasi belauk on that
morning. He knows that he was wrong, but he still eating there. Pak Imam often going to
Mariah’s stall even feel guilty. Finally, pak imam went to the mosque alone and thinking
about this problem.
REFLECTION.

First of all, I would like to give special thanks to my lecturer, Madam Umaimah
Binti Mohd Idris who has given me lots of information to complete the task given. She
helped me to check and gave any suggestions for me to complete this task
successfully. She always explains about the difficulties that I face during completing the
task.

This task enable me to gain and upgrade me about Kelantanian. Moreover, when
I read this short story, there are some traditions in Kelantan that I don’t know. The
information that I gathered will help to increase my knowledge although just read a nice
short story.

Actually, there were lot of problems to settle during to do this task. I was so busy
because I had to attend my sister wedding. I need to do a lot of works just to launch my
sister wedding. I was so tired for the whole day. So, I’m just let my laptop at my room for
the whole day.

But, I feel happy because I have the information about this task before the day of
my sister wedding. So, it will make my task easier to be done. Therefore, I must work
fast to setltle this task. These weakness make me more determined in completing this
task.

As a conclusion, I have gained a lot of knowledge from the task given which is
very useful for me in the future.
