Nouns

A noun is a word that names something: a person, place, or thing.

In a sentence, nouns can play the role of subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, object complement, or adjective.

Types of Nouns:

Nouns are broadly classified as:

1. Proper Nouns
2. Common Nouns

Proper Nouns:

A proper noun is a specific name of a person, place, or thing, and is always capitalized.

Ex:

1. Everyone in the theatre gasped when Mr Stark was injured by Thanos


2. Avengers – Infinity war movie was the highest grosser of all times
3. Elections were held in Karnataka recently
4. Ambati Rayudu won the Man of the Match Award in the game against Rajasthan Royals
5. My cat Toothless, is fond of milk and fish
6. Finding Nemo was my favourite animation movie for a long time

Common Nouns:

A common noun is the generic name of an item in a class or group and is not capitalized unless appearing at the beginning of a sentence or in a
title. The opposite of a proper noun is a common noun.
Examples:

1. The girl worked two shifts everyday


2. Cities are over-populated for the opportunities they offer
3. A friend in need is a friend indeed
4. Dolphins love interacting with humans
5. Scientists have developed a new vaccine for Ebola Fever
6. The employees is this retail outlet are courteous and friendly

The words italicized are common nouns

There are many types of common nouns namely, Concrete nouns, Abstract nouns, Countable & Uncountable nouns, Collective nouns, Singular
nouns and Plural nouns.

Concrete Nouns:

Concrete nouns are those which can be sensed by the five physical senses – Sight, Audio, Smell, Touch, Taste. It is physical and real.

Examples:

1. The newly installed burglar system works fine even in heavy snow
2. The cinema hall had rickety chairs and made the experience a painful one
3. Sandy bought a floral headdress for the wedding
4. Gucci handbags are never on sale
5. Captain America has a powerful Shield
6. Anitha wanted the Harry Potter wand for her birthday

Abstract nouns
An abstract noun is a quality, a concept, an idea, or maybe even an event. In essence, it is opposite of a concrete noun. It can only be perceived
and exists only in the mind.

Collective noun:

Collective nouns are names for a collection or a number of people or things. Collective nouns are words for single things that are made up
of more than one person, animal, place, thing, or idea.

Examples

1. Mr Rhodes waited anxiously for the Jury to deliver the verdict


2. Napoleon’s army was considered to be the best of its time
3. Ms Wright’s class was awarded the ‘Model class of the year’
4. The cast and crew of the movie were taken on a trip to Bahamas after the gruelling shoot
5. The audience let out a collective gasp when the hero fell from the skyscraper
6. The troupe of the leading singer missed the flight and were stranded just before the concert began
