ny is teaching French and Eng­
lish at Cheery Creek High School.
Recently she becam e engaged to
Lt. Carl David Peterson of Tena-
fly, New Jersey, who was grad­
uated from Williams College, Wil-
liamstown, Massachuesetts, in
1953, and is presently stationed at
the new Air Force Academ y. She
adds: “ Dave was pictured in
newspapers anfd on the Ed Sulli­
van Show modeling one of the
new academ y uniforms designed
by Cecil B. DeMille.” They plan­
ned a D ecem ber wedding. She,too,
said how proud she was of the
Highlanders on the Sullivan Show,
and that she is always with them
in spirit in all their adventures—
and they are “ one of the outstand­
ing features in any perform ance.”

Jan says that Las Cruces is 20,-
000 population, 20 miles from the

for Dr.O. L. Schaefer in Las

“ He only gets home one weekend
a month and I would certainly
love to have anyone com e see
us. “ Button” (really a Junior
Engelbeck) is 6 months as of
December 4th and loads of fun —
we love him! So anxious to get
my Highlander letter of this
year; the one from last year is
nearly worn out. Have used it so
much to see if there are any
scotties’ in the many places
we’ ve lived these past 11 months
(this was our oth m ove.) It’s real­
ly a grand way to make friends
in new places. Have otten thougnt
what fun it would be to get a
cartoon memory book — every­
one send in the funny or fond
memories of trips taken, com ical,
situations, or happenings, and
special ‘characters as there
always seemed to be one or two
every year. I know the European
trips have produced some wonder­
ful ‘embarrassing moments’ . I ’d
love to have one and maybe we
could use the profits for the
Scholarship Fund or another wor­
thy cause. I know there are some

I know in Highlanders and tell

That’s about all that I can think
of at the moment. As you have
probably guessed, most of this
information is hearsay.
Scholarship Fund:
We are certainly grateful to all
of you people for contributing to
the Highlanders Scholarship Fund.
Contributions were a fifty percent
increase over last year, which is
a pretty good record. We are
continuing our program of giving
two “ fee” scholarships every
semester. Our first semester 1956-
57 scholarships went to Pat
Hafner, now on her eighth semes­
ter Highlander membership and
our drum dancer for three of
those years; and to Joy Jarrard,
our pipe and tenor drummer for
the past 3% years. We will award
two scholarships for the second
semester 1956-57.
LAST Y E A R ’S ACTIVITIES OF
THE HIGHLANDERS
The year 1956 is unquestionably
the most successful year the
Highlanders have ever had. In
this year we traveled over 22,000
miles, in 7 countries, 18 states,
which included performances on
both the Atlantic and Pacific
Coasts, perform ed before an es­
timated four million people not
counting TV and Radio audiences.
Among the most important per­
formances, or trips are:
Foreign Tour
To m e it is almost pointless,
however, many have asked the
question, “ Was the 1956 Foreign
lo u r better than the 1952 For­
eign T our?” From m y viewpoint,
in managing the two trips, of
course the 1956 Tour was m ore
successful in terms of making
arrangements for housing and
transportation, in giving the op­
portunity to the girls to extend
their sightseeing to include Swit­
zerland and Italy and m y know­
ing something about the count­
ries from experience gained dur­
ing the first rrip, when I felt on
that first trip, it was pretty much
’the blind leading the blind.’
We felt very happy about the
Scottish cities where we had per­
formed on the first trip asking
us to repeat performances on
the 1956 Trip. We renewed our
friendships namely with Tom
Sutherland and his wife, Ina.
They are just the same and as
keenly interested in things Ameri­
can as ever. I feel badly that
I must report that George Ander­
son of Aberdeen passed away two
weeks before we arrived. The oth­
er mem bers of the Aberdeen
Council — Nicholson, Black, Bob

Simpson, etc., are all in there,
very active, making our visit
to Aberdeen a most enjoyable
one. In Inverness we again saw
M alcolm Cameron and Allen
Ross. In Dundee we saw Gorge
Grant and fam ily again. George
is just as nervous as ever. In
Glasgow we met again George
Garside, Superintendent of the
Parks Department. And in Edin­
burgh we again saw Alex Thain,
Parks Department in Edinburgh.
In London we again met our
friend, Jim Layton, of the Parks
Department. We met many,
many, m ore people who are the
epitomy of graciousness.
Leaving Iowa City on July 12th
after a full week of rehearsing
in the hot sun we arrived in
Washington, D. C., where the
Iowa Alumni Association, along
with Representative Schwengel,
took over. A special tour of the
White House was arranged and
we visited and met the British
Ambassador at the British E m ­
bassy. We performed on the
grounds of the Washington Monu­
ment before a very large and
enthusiastic audience. After two
days in Washington, we left for
New York where we had quite
a time. First thing was Ed Sul­
livan’s which was an ex­
perience we will never forget. A f­
ter a few other performances, in­
cluding an appearance for the
New York-Iowa Alumni arranged
by our old friend, Arlo Wilson,
we had a visit with Mayor Wag­
ner of New York City, and a humidity about 90! Here again,
perform ance. We left on the
Queen Mary July 19th, arriving
at Cherboug on the 24th, going
directly to Paris. Late that same
evening, we took off for Amster­
dam — an overnight trip in
berths. ( ! ) After two days in
Amsterdam, we traveled to Col­
ogne, Germany, where it seems
everyone bought lederhosen.
After a steamship ride up the
Rhine to Koblenz we spent two
days in that interesting city, then
left for Paris. Fifty-two girls left
us in Koblenz and took off for
about two dozen different side
trips: generally in the direction
of Italy, Switzerland, and south­
ern France, spending anywhere
from one to five days in those
countries, and later joining us
in Paris. Paris was a little eas­
ier to take this time, possibly
because I knew what to expect,
and that the econom ic situation
was a little better than it was
in 1952. After about seven days
in Paris, we landed in London,
playing for the Parks Department
in an outdoor municipal Park
on two occasions. During this
period, we traveled over night
to Plymouth, England, and re­
newed our acquaintances with
those nice people. One, I ’m sure
you will remember is Mr. and
Mrs. Marshall. We arrived in
Edinburgh on August 21st, and
were met by pipers of the Edin­
burgh Police Band, which was
reminiscent of the thrill the 1952
group received. We received the
same amenities from the City of
Edinburgh that we did in 1952:
which included tickets tc the Ed­

Karen Greenwood (Sidney) and Karen
Clause (Jefferson) were among the 31 drum­
mers who toured Europe last summer. Both
are seniors this year.
HIGHLANDER CHRISTMAS LETTER
inburgh Tattoo. We w ere fortu­
nate to be present the night that
the Queen, and now Prince (Duke
of Edinburgh) attended the per­
formance.
We took off for a nine day tour
of the Highlands, playing in Glas-
cow, Dundee, Iverness, Aberdeen,
and added one town on this trip
— Elgin — where we again met
some very nice people. We stay­
ed in private homes in Elgin and
Aberdeen. We returned to Edin­
burgh the first of September, and
attended the plays and theatres
of the Edinburgh Festival. We
were rained out on our perfor­
mance for the Festival. We re­
turned to New York on Septem­
ber 11th on the Queen Mary.
The Trip was most successful
in terms of public relations and
beneficial to the University and
the State of Iowa. The girls, as
usual were perfect ladies, and
to maintain their reputation, not
one lost her passport, ticket or
suitcase. The Europeans are still
very much impressed with tne
American girl being able to
stand on her own two feet, able
to talk on almost any ubject
without showing any prejudices.
They were also impressed with
the resourcefulness of the girls,
and their ability to cope with al­
most any situation. In turn, our
girls found the Scots and the
English most hospitable and
gracious people.
HIGHLANDER
FOOTBALL SEASON
Of course, the record of our
football team was just perfect,
however, having six home games
and one out ot town to pertonn
at made our football season
schedule pretty rough. I must
say, though, the girls were in
pretty good shape after their
extensive practicing for the F or­
eign Trip, and their perform ances
on this Trip.
NEWTON, IOWA.
We gave a com m and perfor­
mance for President Eisenhower,
and he and Mamie signed our
Drum.
ROSE BOWL TRIP
Here was another very pleasant
experience with the Oldsmobiie
Division of the General Motors
Company financing our trip. One
hundred twenty m em oers of the
Band and 80 mem bers of the
Highlanders left Iowa City on the
28th of Decem ber. We stopped in
Omaha for a short period in
some pretty cold weather, then
went on to Los Angeles. Arriving
there on a Sunday morning, we
were m et by photographers, new­
spaper people, etc., and then
went to Occidental College, our
housing quarters in California.
We participated in m any events
and did so many things all at
once that most of us were pretty
much in a daze during our stay
in Los Angeles. We perform ed on
the Bob Crosby Show, on the
lawn of the Am bassador Hotel,
were taken to the Old Dixie
Restaurant for dinner, to the
Iowa Picnic, and the Moulin
Rouge, where we presented short
perform ?’ ces; visited D ^r.cylind
and Knott’s Berry F arm — all
this as guests of the Oldsmobiie
people.
The Tournament of Roses Par
ade was really rough, and the
girls took a physical beating. It
was 5Yi miles long at a tempo
of 130. We wanted to play as
much as possible, for the Parade
crowd was lined up 30
deep where there were no specta­
tor stands. All during this Parade
route before these two million
people w e would no sooner stop
playing when they would holler
for m ore music. We couldn’t
blame them, but we were just too
exhausted to give out any more.
At the end of the Parade, we had
a box lunch and were driven
immediately to the Rose Bowl it­
self — there we had a couple of
hours’ rest, and then did an eight
minute Pre-Game performance,
which unfortunately was not tele­
vised. At Half-Time we did ano­
ther performance, for which that
and the previous Pre-Game per­
form ance was so good that I Heather about the Tour was the
have received m ore letters and
compliments for these than any
we have ever done. The girls
were really all out to make it
perfect — and they did!
We left L. A. on January 2nd,
and perform ed in Phoenix, Ari­
zona, on January 3rd. We arrived
there in the middle of a rain —
the first one in several months. In
spite of that, we had a pretty fair
crowd. The next day we perform ­
ed in Houston, Texas, when the
weather was 85 degrees and the
the local Oldsmobiie people
made us very welcom e. Our loot
for these stops was that I was
made an Admiral of the Nebraska
Navy at Omaha, an Honorary Cit­
izen of Arizona, and a Deputy
Sheriff in Houston, Texas.
My apologies to those ex-High
landers who undoubtedly went
out of their way to say ‘Hello’ to
m e during our short stops in
Omaha, L. A., Phoenix, and Hous­
ton, for not being able to spend
even a few minutes with you all
for a visit! But you can realize
how crowded we were for time
and energy on these occasions.
The whole Rose Bowl picture
was a tremendous success for the
University and the State of Iowa.
COFFEE HOUR
The Homecoming Coffee party
in the Iowa Memorial Union last
November 3, 1956, seemed to be
well received. Many ex-Highland
ers were able to renew old friend
ships, and talk over pleasant
times — past and present. It was
such a success that we are m ak­
ing the Highlander Coffee Hour an
annual event: Tim e: 10:30 to
11:30 morning of every Home­
coming Game; P lace: Private
Dining Rooms, Iowa Memorial
Union.
FUTURE PLANS OF THE HIGH­
LANDERS
We have lots of invitations that
we have to screen very carefully.
The most important one which is
coming up this March 27th-30th, is
the First National Curling Champ­
ionship in Chicago at the Chicago
Stadium.
We have quite a few small
performances scheduled around
the State, and a few invitations
not yet confirmed for performan­
ces in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and
Detroit, Michigan.
Y es, we will probably make
another Foreign Trip in 1960, pro­
viding the econom ic and political
situation is relatively stable.
THE ADAMSON FAM ILY
The Adamson tribe is still grow­
ing (in age, not num bers). Heat­
her is 11 and in the fifth grade,
and becom ing quite a virtuoso on
the violin. Johnny is a sophomore
in high school and active in
wrestling and debate. Bill is a
fresliman at the University, being
snowed under by Calculus, En­
gineering drawing, Chemistry, etc.
Fran is just as sassy as ever. Me?
I ’m just getting older, and m ore
bewildered.
This has been quite a year for
the Adamson clan. All five of us
went with the Highlanders on the
Foreign Tour. What impressed
ride on the Queens Mary and
Elizabeth, and buying dolls in
each country she visited. What
im pressed Johnny was visiting his­
toric buildings he’s read about in
school. Bill consoled him self to
being the potential escort for 72
girls. Fran went on a shopping
spree at the drop of a shilling,
and I kept hollering: “ Hurry up
and stand in line and w a it!”
Along with all the exciting, in­
teresting and busy activities of
the Highlanders the Adamsons,
as of February first, moved into
their new hom e! We’ve a new
address — 1 Washington Place
— in the east part of Iowa City.
It is a split-level, three bedroom
house, with two fireplaces, and a
recreation room, and study for
m e — where I can get off by
myself and conjure up some
m ore fancy activities for new
Highlanders. Of course, there’s
plenty of big and odd jobs around
to do yet, before we can consider
ourselves completely settled and
finished — nevertheless, you’re
w elcom e to com e see us, and w e’ll
w elcom e your approval, too.
Well, this winds up the annual
Christmas Letter. Christmas ???
I’ll be lucky if I get this off
before the Fourth of J u ly !!!
