The Relay MW 140 can also be used in most applications, where inverse
time, definite time and instantaneous relays are required. The relay gives
selective phase and earth fault protection in time graded systems for many
applications. It ensures reliable protective system and clears only the faulted

3.0. INTRODUCION AND DESCRIPTION MW 140 RELAY BLOCK DIAGRAM
MW 140 is a numeric, non-directional, combined over current and Earth
fault relay. This is intended for protection applications in medium-voltage
networks. These networks may have isolated or resistance or impedance
earthed or solidly earthed neutral points. Definite time over current relays is
both suited for isolated systems and for use as backup to differential relays
and distance relays. Inverse time relays [Over current relay with different
time-current characteristics] are advantageous for inter-connected systems
and solidly grounded system. Another tool for reducing the tripping time for
faults near the source is to use the added instantaneous feature in the numeric
relay.

The block diagram of the Numerical Relay type MW140 is shown in figure.
The relay receives the input current signals [phase current and neutral current]
via four input current transformers. These signals are galvancially de-coupled
and suitably filtered then fed to the A/D converter for amplitude calculation
and further logical processing [i.e. samples, multiplexing].

The micro-controller is continuously monitoring the magnitude of the

phase current and the neutral current. Whenever the phase current or earth
current magnitude exceeds the pre-set value, either low-set current setting
or high-set current setting, and after a pre-set delay, the timer logic is processed
and after comparison with set time schedules and tripping signals are issued
accordingly. There are two output relays and each output relay has two
changeover contacts either for alarm or for tripping.

The auxiliary supply for the numerical relay provided by a Switch

Mode Power Supply (SMPS) unit, with input voltage either AC or DC with a
wide operating voltage from 24- 110 volts or 85 - 265 volts. In case of AC, the
power supply designed to operate from 45 Hz to 65 Hz. The current and time
setting procedures explained in the subsequent sections.
