CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Background

English is an international language in the world and it will be

unifying language for people from every countries. English as an

international language can be proved from various fields that will be

related to the English language. A great deal of academic discourse

around the world takes place in English, many journal articles in fields as

diverse as astrophysics and zoology have English as a default language

(Harmer, 2014:17). Evident from many various television programs show

that they often use the English language to convey the information. In

other addition, the delivery of information by using English has been

found in printed media, such as newspapers.

Printed media is usually distributed weekly or daily in the form of a

folded book of papers. The publication is typically sectioned of based on

subject and content. The most important or interesting news will be

displayed on the front page of the publication. Newspapers may also

include advertisements, opinions, entertainment and other general interest

news.

The Jakarta Post is one of the Indonesian English newspapers

which publish daily. It might be one of the English language media that

still exist until now. Publish since 1983; The Jakarta Post helps Indonesian

people to be more intelligent. It captivates the readers with a variety of

cultures and unifies Indonesia’s position as the largest archipelagic

country in Southeast Asia. There are many articles in The Jakarta Post,

such as national headlines, sports, opinion, business, world, special issue,

etc.

When people read the news, then indirectly they finds words in the

English language that consists of English words as a pure English words

(root words) and borrowing English words that have a specific purpose.

Some words are a root and others come from the affixation.

An affixation is one of morphological process in language, where

new words are formed through the addition of morphemes as affixation.

According to Zapata (2007: 4), affixation consists in adding derivational

affixes (i.e., prefixes, infixes and suffixes) to roots and stems to from new

words. An affix is a bound morpheme that occurs before or within or after

a base. There are three kinds of affixation: prefixes, infixes and suffixes. It

is related to statement by Yule (2006:8), derivational is a process of word

formation to be found in the production of new English words.

Derivational morphemes are bound morphemes which derive (create) new

words by either changing the meaning or the part of speech or both.

Derivational is the process of creating a new word out of a root word,

usually by additing a prefix or a suffix.

Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested to conduct

a study entitled: An analyzing Derivational Affixes Process of English

Noun-Formation in The Jakarta Post Newspaper.

B. Formulation of the Problems

Based on the background of the study above, the problems of the

study are formulated in the form of questions as follows:

1. What are kinds of derivational affixes of noun formation found in The

Jakarta Post Newspaper?

2. How are the processes of derivational affixes of noun formation found

in The Jakarta Post Newspaper?

C. The Scopes of the Study

It is important for the writer to limit the area of the study. The

writer just focuses on the derivational affixes of noun formation in The

Jakarta Post. The writer takes the data from the headline of The Jakarta

Post which published on April 1st - 7th 2018. The titles are:

D. The Objectives of the Study

Based on the problems that formulated above, the objectives of the

study were as follow:

1. To find out the kinds of derivational affixes of noun formation

in The Jakarta Post Newspaper.

2. To analyze the process of derivational affixes of noun

formation in The Jakarta Post Newspaper.

E. Significances of the Study

The writer hopes the result of this study will be useful for some points:

1. For English Lecturer

This study will give information and understanding about

derivation affixes of English noun formation. Actually, it can be a

good contribution for subject of lecture, especially for English lecturer

to increase their teaching method to explain about morphology in

specific part of derivational affixes of noun formation through

analyzing the newspaper, journal, novels, short story and etc.

2. For English Learner

The student can use their understanding of derivation for finding or

writing about derivational affixes process in some articles, books, daily

conversation and activities. The students also can improve the

vocabulary and knowledge through noun formation of derivational

affixes.

3. For English Reader

The reader can understand and differentiate the meaning, kinds and

process of noun formation change by derivation suffixes, from the

original words into the words that have a new meaning. It can help

them to find the purpose of articles easily.

4. For the Writer

The study is expected to enrich and develop writer knowledge and

understanding about English learning strategies in mastering English.

5. For Other Writer

This study hopefully is able to give more references and

information for the other researchers who need source in conducting a

research related to this study.

F. The Operational Definition

It is necessary to define several terms used in this study to avoid

misunderstanding about the topics, they are as follows:

1. Analysis

Analysis is an activity that contains a number of activities

such as parsing, differentiating, sorting something to be

classified and regrouped according to certain criteria then

searched for its relation and interpreted its meaning. Analysis

in this study is aimed to group words based on noun word-

formation and interpret the new word formed based on affix

used.

2. Derivational affixes of Noun formation

Derivation is a type of word formation process by creating

a new word out of an oold word which is ussualy achieved by

attaching affixes. Some affixation of the suffixes can creates a

noun words. This research uses theory by Sadiya (2017:2).

3. Jakarta Post Newspaper

The Jakarta Post is one of the Indonesian English

newspapers which still publish until now. Publish since 1983, It

There are many articles in The Jakarta Post, such as national

etc. This newspaper captivates the readers with a variety of

cultures, and then unifies Indonesia’s position as the largest

archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. In this study the writer

takes the data from the headline of The Jakarta Post which

published on April 1st - 7th 2018.
