Teaching English as a Foreign Language

English is a dominantly global language used for international

communication around the world. English as a Foreign Language means the

students were learning English in order to use it with any other English speakers

in the world when the students might be tourists or business people (Harmer,

2014: 19).

The fiew of Maxon (2009: 9), there are many factors contribute to the

market for teaching English as a Foreign Language. The historical factor offers

the legacy of the old British Empire that took the language round the world. The

political factor gives the current dominance of USA. Science and technology have

developed with English at the forefront. In addition, there a need for a global

language to make international communication smoother, and tools such as the

worldwide web truly accessible around the planet.

According to Cook (2003: 26), for a large proportion of world’s

population, the learning and use of English as an additional languages is both a

major language need-often one upon which their livelihood depends-and also one

of salient language experiences of their lives. In addition, both non native and

native speaker are involve in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) as

teachers, planners, administrators, publishers, and testers. For these reason alone,

the teaching and learning of English has generated tremendous personal, political,

academic, and commercial interest.

In conclusion Teaching English as a Foreign Language is teaching English

to the people whose first language is not English and they do not used English in
their community communication. They learn English in order to get

communication to another English speaker or to get access to information

exchange around the world.
